Ok But Not Great

Deadlocked reminded me a little of the 11th Sookie, Dead Reckoning. It was not as slow as the 10th Dead in the Family but nowhere near as action and drama oriented as the 9th Dead and Gone. There was action and there was drama but a lot of the book was spent tying up some loose ends (but not all of them). I found I liked Eric less in this book than any other book and I even found Sookie to have more of a “poor me” attitude which was a little annoying. Other than the few pity parties Sookie had and Eric being a jerk I really enjoyed this book. I’m a little sad that there is reportedly only one more Sookie book left and then it will be over but I am excited to find out how it all will end. If you have read all the Sookie’s up to this point Deadlocked is a must read of course, it is good but not one of the best in my opinion.

Succubus Blues was just ok for me. I liked the narrator and thought she did a good job with the voices. The story line to me was just ok. The book just seemed to lack something to me. I am not sure I will get any more in this series unless I just run out of everything else I want to read and need something to fill the time. The book did keep me guessing as to who the bad guy was; I had many ideas but was not 100% sure until close to time for the reveal. This is just not a book that made me want to read the next one and I feel in a week or so I won’t remember much about it.

I really enjoyed Dream A Little Dream the 4th in the Chicago Stars series by SEP. I liked the first three books better than this one but it was still very good and got better towards the end. I love the narrator and the story line even though very similar and predictable in some ways is still very good and has just enough mystery to keep you listening. I look forward to reading the rest of this series and more books by SEP.

Thanksgiving was a fun little holiday listen. I was not crazy about the narrator and the story was a little silly at times but that is kind of what you expect for fun short holiday themed books. I have read better but I don’t regret buying this book it had many cute funny parts and was nice to listen to right before the holidays.

I really enjoyed Body Movers. I found it to be pretty funny with a good story line and I had not figured out the killer before the end. I enjoyed the narrator also. I will be continuing with this series.

I have loved every book I have listened to by Jennifer Crusie (Bet Me, Welcome to Temptation) and Maybe This Time is no different, in fact I think it is my favorite. This is great chick lit with a little bit of paranormal tossed in to mix things up. The narrator is great and in my mind perfect for all the voices. The story line is interesting and just different enough from the normal chick lit to keep you on your toes. If you like romance, creepy old houses, and ghosts then you have to try this book. Even if the paranormal puts you off you should try this book, the paranormal is there but not overwhelming. This is one of my favorite books I have listened to this year.

Welcome to Temptation was my second Jennifer Cruise book and I enjoyed it just as much, probably more, than Bet Me. The plot is described above so I won’t retype it here. What I can tell you is the narrator was good (I had no issues with her at all but if you’re worried try the sample) and the plot is great. I will warn you this is an adult book with lots of sex and quite a bit of language. The characters were great and by the end of the book you hate to say goodbye to them. If you’re looking for great chick lit with some steamy scenes, some humor, a little bit of mystery, and a lot of craziness then come to Temptation and stay awhile. I will be reading Faking It soon. :)

Blackwork was the first book I read in the Needlecraft Series by Monica Ferris and I really enjoyed the story and the narrator. I like cozy mysteries but have trouble finding ones I like the narrator on. This was not only an interesting plot but the narrator was easy to listen to. I know this is not the first book in the series but I wanted a Halloween themed cozy since this is October. If you enjoy cozy mysteries and want a light easy listen with a Halloween theme then try this book. I will be listening to more of this series I just wish Audible had them all.

I am on the fence about this book. Still Life was kind of entertaining but not gripping. You did want to know who the murderer was and find out the secrets but I did not really fall in love with the characters so all the filler in between felt a little drug out to me. The narrator was ok but not one of my favorites. I have to agree with one of the other reviews that the men were a little whinny and it did get on my nerves. I would say if you are looking for a nice kind of slow paced mystery then give this one a try. I am not sure if I will read any more of this series unless I just cannot find anything else to get at the time.

Where to begin???

I am not even sure where to begin with a review of The Night Circus. I guess starting with the premise is good. On the surface the book is about two illusionists that compete in games with using their students also illusionists as playing pieces. This book is about two particular students who are trapped into this game by their teacher’s before they are old enough to understand what the game is or how it works. Their game board is a circus that was created for this purpose. Their battle is not one of violence but one of who is better (or at least it seems that way at first). Under the surface The Night Circus is a beautifully told story about the people that are connected to the Circus. The book was not action packed and could drag and be confusing at times. For example the story goes back and forth in time, changes location, and changes who you are reading about with almost every chapter. Listening to it makes it hard to keep up with what year and location you are in and what year and location you just left, this would be easier to keep up with if you were reading instead of listening to it. That being said the confusion of listening to the book over reading it is outweighed by the wonderful narration of Jim Dale. I loved listening to him read the Harry Potter books and he was just as wonderful with The Night Circus. This book is hard to describe and will not be for everyone as it is a little long for the story it provides. Some people will love the length and all the extra details that are not really important just beautiful to listen to (I am one of those people) and some people will feel that this extra stuff just dragged the story out and made it hard to get through. All I know is I greatly enjoyed this book and loved the ending with Widget; I thought that was perfect. All I can suggest is to give it a try if nothing else I would think the rich detail of beautiful mysterious tents read by Jim Dale would be worth it.
