Story
As elegant as the Sacramento residence she operates, Isabelle Labrie keeps her past concealed, like the treasure she hides under the Golden Hotel. It's 1853, the heyday of the California Gold Rush. Isabelle is full of hope, staking her claim on the city's refined clientele and her future on a sweetheart's promise to marry her when he returns from the gold fields. Then, unexpected guests - fugitive slaves seeking safe passage to the North - force her to confront her past and reconsider her path.

Dobson weaves a tale that keeps one listening and holding their breath in anticipation from moment to moment. Her history is spot on and creates a picture of what once was. Love her writing.

First Pitt book I read. Wonderfully rich characters. As enjoyable to listen to as it was to read and Scott Brick is an amazing narrator.

Twisted—-And good!

The twists are fabulous and juicy. Story line is well thought out and executed. Gwen is great, human with flaws, misgivings and amazing. Characters are well written.
The narrator is perfect and I look forward to the next book.
Could have done without the explicit language or at least so much of it. I get it . Staying true to the emotional upheaval but would have preferred a lot less.
