Story
Zombies...really? Things go from amazing to appalling for Brighton in the course of one evening. First, there's a marriage proposal. Then, there's a creepy thing at the edge of the woods. That's all followed up by a dead witch who was dabbling in necromancy. More than dabbling, actually. That crazy witch was rolling around in it like a pig in mud. Unfortunately, Brighton and friends will learn the hard way how tough it is to break a dead witches spell.

Not A Stand Alone book
Reviewed: 03-16-24
This was a good story. I enjoyed it as much as the previous books in the series. Until it stops in a cliffhanger and the next book in the series is not available. Telling the heroine of the series that she can't be saved/or maybe there is a way is not a good ending. I don't know whether to search for the next book in print or give up on the author.

Story
In only two weeks, Tap Andrews will tip his hat and say "so long" to bachelorhood. Normally, that would be enough time to take care of business and finalize wedding plans. But considering his knack for finding trouble, it may take him longer. For instance, there's a gang of rustlers invading his ranch, a missed bank payment he didn't know about, a sniper taking potshots at him, and problems at the local dance hall. In fact, there's so much trouble that it's likely he'll miss his own wedding!

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
I have always loved the Anne of Green Gables series. I remember reading them aloud to my sister when we were both young. This book has the poignant love story as Anne grows up. It is sweet, very sad one point and yet full of laughs all the way through.
Who was your favorite character and why?
It is hard to choose between Anne and Marilla. Anne is so full of high ideals and dreams, but is always being forced to face reality and the problems of life. She does it as any real person would with fits of temper, tears.
Marilla, on the other hand, shares wisdom, with very few displays of emotion. She tends to keep her feelings, bottled up inside herself. Something I would love to be able to do most of the time.
Would you be willing to try another one of Renee Raudman’s performances?
I might try her once more, but I prefer other people who have narrated some of these books. She doesn't put as much life into the characters.
Was Anne of the Island worth the listening time?
Yes, any book by Lucy Maude Montgomery is well worth taking the time to listen too.

Story
When Barry Fairweather dies unexpectedly in his early 40s, the little town of Pagford is left in shock. Pagford is, seemingly, an English idyll, with a cobbled market square and an ancient abbey, but what lies behind the pretty façade is a town at war. Rich at war with poor, teenagers at war with their parents, wives at war with their husbands, teachers at war with their pupils.... Pagford is not what it at first seems. And the empty seat left by Barry on the town's council soon becomes the catalyst for the biggest war the town has yet seen.

Disappointing!

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
If the book had not jumped constantly from one group of characters to the next without any since of continuity.
What could J. K. Rowling have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
Rowling should go back to the formula that worked so well in the Harry Potter books. Fully developed characters, action and an interesting plot. This book is the most poorly written peice I have read since I stopped teaching and having to grade student essays.
What character would you cut from The Casual Vacancy?
At least three-quarters of them. It is hard to choose just one.
Any additional comments?
I would advise people to save their money and skip this book.

What did you love best about The Chase?
Ms. Mills took an overused premise (author/or actor shadowing FBI) and turned it into a fantastic storyline with well developed characters. I enjoyed how she worked the theme of the need for God into the lives of people who felt they could wait until later, without the book becoming "preachy".
