Story
Many of us feel trapped in a grind of constant change: rolling news cycles, the chatter of social media, our families split along partisan lines. We feel fearful and tired, on edge in our bodies, not quite knowing what has us perpetually depleted. For Katherine May, this low hum of fatigue and anxiety made her wonder what she was missing. Could there be a different way to relate to the world, one that would allow her to feel more rested and at ease, even as seismic changes unfold on the planet?

Enjoying the now
Reviewed: 01-17-24
This was another solid reflective work by Katherine May. I enjoyed the deeper messages about being present, creating joy in the mundane, cultivating community, navigating the shadow (or shadow self), and seeking and seeing hierophany in nature and more. I do wish there were a bit more substance to what we do, collectively, in the face of struggles in the world and the sheer grief and loneliness that come with aging and the growing hatred we see in the world. The book’s focus is on the individual, and I appreciate it for what it is, but it left me wondering n more about us all collectively. How do we all achieve greater connection and enchantment? May doesn’t answer this nor is it necessarily her project, but the book will leave you wondering a bit more. Maybe that’s the point?

Story
Sometimes you slip through the cracks: unforeseen circumstances like an abrupt illness, the death of a loved one, a breakup, or a job loss can derail a life. These periods of dislocation can be lonely and unexpected. For May, her husband fell ill, her son stopped attending school, and her own medical issues led her to leave a demanding job. Wintering explores how she not only endured this painful time, but embraced the singular opportunities it offered. Ultimately Wintering invites us to change how we relate to our own fallow times.

A Reminder of the Seasonality of Life
Reviewed: 01-04-24
Katherine May's foray into the seasonality of life is an enduring reminder that our lives are intertwined with nature.
Sprinkled with natural, biological, historical, spiritual, and fictional insights relating to preparing for, enduring, and thawing from winter, the book is a healthy reminder that rest and recovery are necessary conditions of life not to be ignored, but rather embraced for the lessons they offer in way of listening to our bodies and nature. This book can help shift perspectives on wintering, but only insofar as one embraces the somewhat autoethnographic journey May weaves from one Icelandic adventure to a lengthy chat with a wolf expert and more, which may feel a bit winding as it is whimsical.
Still, the connections to nature and seasonality are thoughtfully applied, and I found myself rethinking aspects of life in ways I hadn't expected.

Great Negotiation Strategies
Reviewed: 10-12-19
At first I thought I’d dislike this book because, like many self-help books, it seemed like it would push advice over many pages that could be summarized succinctly.
Fortunately, this book is succinct, yet detailed enough to drive home each of the five major points presented. I appreciated the audio clips of negotiation situations and the authors skillful usage of quotations and examples to help illustrate how, where, and why one might use the strategies discussed within. The authors voice is also easy to listen to and follow along with for the 2+ hours the book runs.
I’ll definitely listen to this again and again for future discussions at work and on my path to becoming an independent consultant.

Story
Mitchell, widely known for his original and definitive translations of spiritual writings and poetry, has taken the work of Neruda (1904-1973), whose poems are passionate, humorous, and exceptionally accessible, and brought them to life for a whole new generation of listeners. Mitchell has selected nearly 50 poems for this collection, which focuses on Neruda's mature period, beginning with Elemental Odes, published when he was 50 years old, and ending with Full Powers, published when he was 58.

Beautiful Poems and Performance, but Slight Echo
Reviewed: 04-17-15
Would you consider the audio edition of Full Woman, Fleshly Apple, Hot Moon to be better than the print version?
Stephen Mitchell carefully reads each poem with conscious and clear pacing that emphasizes the nuances of Pablo Neruda's words. The translation is accurate.
What did you like best about this story?
Neruda's poems are beautiful, thoughtful, humorous and touching. Mitchell gives them life with his voice.
Did the narration match the pace of the story?
Yes, but there was a bit of an haunting sounding echo after each word was read. It wasn't bad, but it was a little distracting because there isn't any real strong silent pauses that would add impact to Neruda's words as read by Mitchell.
