Story
More than two centuries after World War III poisoned the planet, the final bastion of humanity lives on massive airships circling the globe in search of a habitable area to call home. Aging and outdated, most of the ships plummeted back to Earth long ago. The only thing keeping the two surviving lifeboats in the sky are Hell Divers - men and women who risk their lives by skydiving to the surface to scavenge for parts the ships desperately need.

I read some reviews and think people think too hard and analyze too much. For me, if time passes pleasantly while listening and at the end I am driven to find out either what is next or I wish there was more, that’s all it takes. I’m listening to book 2 in this series now and have my sights set on book 3. Having R.C. do the narration is also a great selling point.

Story
As a child, Chris Hooper dreamed of monsters. But in deep space, he found only darkness and isolation. Then, on planet LV178, he and his fellow miners discovered a storm-scoured, sand-blasted hell - and trimonite, the hardest material known to man. When a shuttle crashes into the mining ship Marion, the miners learn that there was more than trimonite deep in the caverns. There was evil, hibernating and waiting for suitable prey.

Wow. Chills!
Reviewed: 06-05-16
I remember the original trailer to Alien. All these clips flashing past, then darkness, then "in space, no one can hear you scream" on the screen. Chills. This production of Out of Shadows gave me that same goose bump excitement in that first few minutes. Then it only got better. The "across radio" dialogue was great. The sound effects were spot on, and the narration was incredible. You can tell everyone involved has a real respect for the franchise. Ruined my Sunday afternoon plans! Ha.

Story
From the Audie-nominated narrator of The Martian. In eleven years' time, a million members of an alien race will arrive at Earth. Years before they enter orbit, their approach will be announced by the flare of a thousand flames in the sky, their ships' huge engines burning hard to slow them from the vast speeds needed to cross interstellar space. These foreboding lights will shine in our night sky like new stars, getting ever brighter until they outshine even the sun, casting ominous shadows and banishing the night until they suddenly blink out.

Necessary Dissapointment
Reviewed: 01-08-12
I listened to all the earlier books a second time through when Dance with Dragons FINALLY came out. It had been s long, I needed to remember everything.
It was great to have Roy Dutrice back, although he should have done the same as me, so as to remember some of the voices. He mixed things up in this book with several characters. Dani now sounds like an old hag and the Priestess of Fire the same.
But I was also disappointed in the book itself, Roy Dutrice's mixups aside. It dragged on and on and I had a hard time getting lost in the story like I had in earlier books. First Martin ends the previous book unexpectedly, now he seems to want to put the series to death with A Dance of Dragons. I guess I want to do the same.

Hostorical Facts With Feet!
Reviewed: 08-22-10
I really enjoyed this book. Once I had finished I did a "quick study" on the period of time covered in the book and was pleased to see how I had learned the facts of history from the novel. If the reader is worried that reading this historical novel will make it confusing to understand where history ends and imagination begins, don't be troubled. The facts are not sacrificed. Indeed, they come alive and are given context. And if you finish the book thinking you have somehow gotten inside Cicero's head, it's a good thing, really!
And Simon Jones does an excellent job reading this book. Great combination.

Can't Get Into It
Reviewed: 05-31-10
I was looking forward to this series after listening to book one. But the reader changes in this book, book two. It's an unfortunate way of life in audio books - although it doesn't happen after only one book, usually. It was enough to derail me in this series, however. Maybe I'll come back when the contrast will no longer be remembered.

Story
For 18 years, Ed Viesturs pursued climbing's holy grail: to stand atop the world's 14 8,000-meter peaks, without the aid of bottled oxygen. But No Shortcuts to the Top is as much about the man who would become the first American to achieve that goal as it is about his stunning quest. As Viesturs recounts the stories of his most harrowing climbs, he reveals a man torn between the flat, safe world he and his loved ones share and the majestic and deadly places where only he can go.

I read a audio review about Ed Viesturs being real stuck up on himself. But I had just listened to Into Thin Air and I was hungry for more information about '96 on Everest and the dead zone above 26,000 ft.
As I listened to the book, I found myself agreeing with this negative assessment - at first. But as I went along I decided this was more due to the person reading, and I decided to give Mr Viesturs the benefit of a doubt! My apologies, Ed.
This book was a good listen. It I Introduced me to an exclusive world above 8000 meters, where only Ed and a few others have been. If I had picked up Herzog's book on Annapurna in the 70's maybe it would have been me . . . . Nah!
Thanks.

I have been a student of the Bible for 35 years and started listening to audo bibles back in the days when just the NT took up 16 or so cassette tapes. But this is a real gem. I think another reviewer hit the nail on the head when they said the different voices and the dramatized backgrounds and music help you REMEMBER the events taking place and fill in many gaps in understanding. Isn't that what it's all about?
Funny, though. When I purchased this and saw in in "My Library" I had to snicker - - - Audible left the Author column blank. C'mon! We all know GOD wrote it, right? (with the help of some men inspired by Him put His words to vellum/parchment)
Anyway, you can't go wrong with this purchase. Period!

Most of my reviews are a bit longer. This one doesn't need to be. The only thing that ever turned me off by this book when I saw it in a library or store was the cover art. So sad that's all that kept me from ever jumping to this series earlier. Good narration, good story line, good originality. And when I got done, the pleasent thought of . . . only 19 more to go! I may jump away from time to time, but I know I will see it thru to the end!
