Story
This is Kazuo Ishiguro's profoundly compelling portrait of a butler named Stevens. Stevens, at the end of three decades of service at Darlington Hall, spending a day on a country drive, embarks as well on a journey through the past in an effort to reassure himself that he has served humanity by serving the "great gentleman," Lord Darlington. But lurking in his memory are doubts about the true nature of Lord Darlington's "greatness," and much graver doubts about the nature of his own life.

In most cases the book is better than the movie. This is not one of those cases. The screen writer took the best parts of the book and made a very good movie.

Story
In spring 1936, the Holy Land erupted in a rebellion that targeted both the local Jewish community and the British Mandate authorities. The Great Arab Revolt would last three years, cost thousands of lives, and cast the trajectory for the Middle East conflict. The revolt was the crucible in which Palestinian identity coalesced, uniting all in a single struggle for independence. Yet the rebellion would ultimately turn on itself. British forces' aggressive counterinsurgency took care of the rest, finally quashing the uprising on the eve of World War II.

This is a story of cash poor Palestinians with property who sold it to Jews at inflated prices. Over time the Jews continued to purchase property until the Palestinians were about to become a minority. The poor Palestinians without property got the short end of the stick. After a while they were willing to die to get “their” land back.

This has to be the most brutal Joe Pickett book yet. I could not see the need to kill off certain characters in the book. Several friends said the same thing and said that it might be a while before they read another. Made you wonder what Box was thinking in his character development.

Story
Man-made climate change may have began in the last 200 years, but humankind has witnessed many eras of climate instability. The results have not always been pretty: once-mighty civilizations felled by pestilence and glacial melt and drought. But we have one powerful advantage as we face our current crisis: history. The study of ancient climates has advanced tremendously in the past 10 years, to the point where we can now reconstruct seasonal weather going back thousands of years and see just how civilizations and nature interacted.

Excellent review of climate change
Reviewed: 02-28-24
History has been affected more by climate change than most people realize. From early man down to the present day, climate changes contributed to empires rise and fall, migration of peoples and life & death. This is one of the best books I have found on this subject. I highly recommend it to any student of history.

Best book on how to talk to Trump supporters
Reviewed: 02-07-24
I really enjoyed this book. Looking back at the date it was released and having read books by Bob Woodward, Jonathan Karl, David Cay Johnston and others, you will find this book to have much more information on Trump’s supporters and how to not confront them but rather techniques on how to get them to do some critical thinking. A lot of it goes back to Habit 5, Empathic Communication, in Steven Covey’s book. Also in Arthur Clark’s book on Love Your Enemies.
Since 2016 I have heard numerous people say they no longer discuss politics or Trump with their friends or family. I think this book may help a number of people but they need to read it to the end.

Story
Packed with new reporting, Tired of Winning: Donald Trump and the End of the Grand Old Party tracks Trump’s improbable journey from disgraced and defeated former president to the dominant force, yet again, in the Republican Party. From his exile in Mar-a-Lago, Donald Trump has become more extreme, vengeful, and divorced from reality than he was on January 6, 2021. His meddling damaged the GOP’s electoral prospects and his legal troubles were mounting. Yet he re-emerged as the frontrunner for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination, and the president-elect.

Make sure you download the High Quality version of the audiobook. The quality of the Trump recording in the standard version are poor. Overall this is a very good book. Jonathan Karl delivers a compelling argument NOT to let Trump anywhere near the Whire House again. The only problem is that the far right Trump supporters will never listen to it.
