Story
After the latest mission of the starship Flying Dutchman, Earth is safe not just for a year, but for hundreds of years. The ship’s weary crew wonders what they will do with their lives in peacetime, but the enemy has other plans, and there is danger on the Homefront. Starring Zachary Quinto, R.C. Bray, Kate Mulgrew, Robert Picardo, and everyone's favorite AI, Skippy the Magnificent, alongside a full cast. Includes plenty of pew-pew-pew, original sound composition, and maybe some singing by R.C. Bray.

Big fan of the saga but this one doesn't work well
Reviewed: 11-20-24
I've listened to the entire series like 4 times already but I always avoided this one due to bad reviews. This time around I thought 'well, maybe I can finally fill that gap in the story' so I bought it. It did fill the gap and though I love Mr Alanson's creativity and writing, I feel this one doesn't work on the side of the audio editing, voices, etc.
The story doesn't flow. There are weird pauses, the ever present music is distracting, at times the voices can't be understood. And in my point of view, the casting of the voices didn't work. E.g. Smithe is brittish, sure, but far from the actual way R.C. Bray portraits his character through the voice. I would expect the voice actors to perform somewhat close to the original personality, cadence and pitch. Also some of the voice acting is a bit over the top which sounds weird in conversations with other characters that are actually on point.
I knew what I was getting into though, so no regrets. Many reviews stated similar things as this one. I finally went for it so I could understand what happened to Nagatha mostly.

Story
On September 11, 1999, humanity made a monumental discovery in the vastness of space. Scientists uncovered an asteroid of immense scientific importance—a colossal celestial entity. As massive as an aircraft carrier and towering as high as the iconic Empire State Building, this cosmic titan was later named Bennu. Remarkable for much more than its size, Bennu belonged to a rare breed of asteroids capable of revealing the essence of life itself. But just as Bennu became a beacon of promise, researchers identified a grave danger.

Great overall, very interesting story
Reviewed: 08-23-24
Loved to hear multiple narrators for once, all great actors. The story was engaging and interesting. Sound effects were too loud at times covering what the characters were saying. The quality of the audio and effects was great, the only issue was the volume of the effects over the voices at times. I feel the ending missed a line or two, but I'm guessing it was written like that for effect. Anyway I recommend it!

Superb ending to a fantastic trilogy

Yes. I'm now a fan of mr Sansbury Smith. I'll have to peruse his other works. This journey was packed of believable characters, great narrative, fantastic storylines, great dominion on sci-fi and an epic ending to the story. I very much like the relevant detail provided in that last recorded message (trying not to spoil but be clear enough for those who know). R.C. made it all believable and relatable. What a great writer/narrator combo!

I'm really liking this trilogy, super engaging, great characters, great world details, I can see the places and situations (it doesn't happen always for me). R.C. manages with ease the range of voices and accents which is the cherry on top. There were some very minor fluctuations in volume and audio quality but nothing that takes me away from the story.

Longer than it should be but great ending
Reviewed: 08-02-24
As several others said, it could have been way shorter. I was halfway through and almost dropped it but the reviews kept me going. The story is great, don't get me wrong, but way too long in the setup phase. Around the 3/4 mark things started to get very interesting. I do appreciate the cat in space situation quite a bit, very funny and inventive. Narration is excellent, my only complaint is the gaspy-breathing style this narrator has (as some others I've heard) it gets old very fast. But apart from that, great job from Eva Kaminsky.

I’m an atheist but that doesn’t mean I can’t appreciate a great book, specially when the characters are so well written and are so relatable. Narration is good but characters can’t be differentiated often. Looking forward to reading the next one!
