Story
In this powerful true crime memoir, an award-winning identity theft expert tells the shocking story of the duplicity and betrayal that inspired her career and nearly destroyed her family. Axton Betz-Hamilton grew up in small-town Indiana in the early '90s. When she was 11 years old, her parents both had their identities stolen. Their credit ratings were ruined, and they were constantly fighting over money. This was before the age of the Internet, when identity theft became more commonplace, so authorities and banks were clueless and reluctant to help Axton's parents.

Story
Drawing on dozens of intimate audio interviews with families from all across the country, award-winning psychologist and writer Andrew Solomon redefines what it means to be an “ideal family” in America today. Solomon observes that America, led in large part by the women’s, civil rights, and gay rights movements, has undergone a radical social shift in the last few decades. Although the structure of family has changed, economic and legal structures lag behind and need to adapt to accommodate this explosive new reality.

Inspiring hope for the modern day family
Reviewed: 12-17-18
Covering all the struggles that American families are facing in this generation, 'New Family Values' imparts real hope for anyone who has ever had a passionate desire to make a real difference in a child's life. Single fathers are finding parenthood to be as fulfilling as the single mothers of the last decade. But they are discovering new and innovative ways to respond to the deep emotional needs of our children. In growing numbers, it is the families helping families to respond in unique and intimate ways to the individual needs of the children they share concern for ...THAT WILL remedy the outdated Child Protective Services of our past. This is a critical time for Family Services to wake up and REFORM.
As the demand far outpaces the availability for the limited services they have historically provided, millions of children remain in the system each day. Furthermore, the problematic response of the present day system to those children who have been severely neglected and abused has failed to truely protect children and help them recover.
Our families have evolved, our society has shifted, but our values have remained strong. Our focus is still very narrow on building the healthy kind of environments that our children so desperately need in order to grow and thrive. This book definately addresses and inspires ALL creative thinkers to respond to those needs!

My husband and I took this Audible on vacation, a 1200 mile road trip with two dogs! The frequent stops and nightly pet friendly hotels, forced us to speculate who were the REAL good and bad characters in the story. The characters were very strong but you've got to pay attention and get to know them! I suggest not listening straight through without taking breaks to "steep the tea".

September 8, 1900, began innocently in the seaside town of Galveston, Texas. Even Isaac Cline, resident meteorologist for the U.S. Weather Bureau, failed to grasp the true meaning of the strange deep-sea swells and peculiar winds that greeted the city that morning. Mere hours later, Galveston found itself submerged in a monster hurricane that completely destroyed the town and killed over 6,000 people in what remains the greatest natural disaster in American history.

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?
Perhaps this author could have written textbooks for college students who would then be required to read this entire book.
What was most disappointing about Erik Larson’s story?
I expected a thriller about a historical event and wasn’t thrilled with the rambling history of weather forecasting.
How did the narrator detract from the book?
The narrator was the only best part about this book.
You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
I can always return it and choose another?!

Story
On a bitterly cold afternoon in December 1986, a Michigan State trooper found the frozen body of Jerry Tobias in the bed of his pickup truck. The 31-year-old oil field worker and small-time drug dealer was clad only in jeans, a checkered shirt, and cowboy boots. Inside the cab of the truck was a fresh package of expensive steaks from a local butcher shop, the first lead in a case that would be quickly lost in a thicket of bungled forensics, shady prosecution, and a psychopathic star witness out for revenge.

My mind continually went this way and that. I couldn't tell if the good guys were bad, or if the bad guys were good until nearing the end! It was so intriguing and suspenseful that I had to focus almost exclusively on the story! My father in law lived in the Gaylord area, and for years I've been in and around the town, never having heard it! But I will never quite feel the same about the Michigan Justice System again. Sadly I think corruption is spreading as Lichen on a woodpile throughout every county in the State.

What did you like best about Gift of the Red Bird? What did you like least?
I gave it three stars because I enjoyed some parts of the story but there is a whole new age of "christianity" out now with no mention of Christ's work on the cross. The author seemed to be doing some new brand of psychotherapy on herself that she calls GOD.
Would you recommend Gift of the Red Bird to your friends? Why or why not?
no, I would not recommend this book to my Christian friends.
Any additional comments?
I hope Audible will let me trade this book in

it was just so boring, like it was written for third graders, but I doubt I would have found it interesting back then even.
Has Girl with Glasses turned you off from other books in this genre?
what genre? maybe that's why I didn't like it. I usually listen to historical fiction but I got this for free
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Margie Lenhart?
Diane Sawyer can make ANYTHING sound amazing!
