I loved how Elizabeth and Darcy met at Rosings Park. No insult . How their romance developed. Mrs Bennet improves. How Col Fitzwilliam and Darcy are together. Wickham gets his due. Lydia is sent back from Brighton and eventually improves. It may sound like heresy, but I liked Caroline Bingley! Character was not awful over the top, a more humble Caroline...after being pursued for her fortune in town. More so I liked the difference between Col Fitzwilliam and Bingley as suitors to Jane. A very impressive Jane. I also loved the ending where, we know what happens to all the main characters. So often poor Mary is forgotten!

Mr Bennet and Mrs Bennet are abusive to Elizabeth the later by cruelty and the former by inaction.

Jane is hardly the "sweet caring sister" of cannon. Mr Darcy strikes up a friendship with Elizabeth, who is forced to sit in the shadows at the local assembly. Mrs Bennet is a cruel, vindictive mother who disparages and beats Elizabeth (leaving scars on more than her back). Mr Bennet absents himself from his parental duties. Elizabeth has "falling sickness", epilepsy. Bennet allows his wife full control for the peace of his books. Mr Bingley is his usual oblivious self, Miss Bingley is down right diabolical. Col. Fitzwilliam initially suspects Elizabeth is a fortune hunter. A refreshingly reformed Wickham, who has turned his life around. The horrible conditions at Bedlam are shown. Darcy, Georgianna and the family welcome Elizabeth. The Gardiner's are great. Mary and the younger Bennet's are seen as more compassionate to there sister's plight. Although, not fleshed out. Ending was abrupt. An Epilogue would have been helpful.

One finds love despite his inner demons; the other resists love because of them. Elizabeth Bennet. Kitty Bennet. Two sisters, strengthened by adversity. I was hesitant to give it a listen at first. However, the back storys of the Bennet's, Fitzwilliam's, Darcy's and Mr Hurst! A duel begins the story, with a dastardly villain killing the father and mother of someone we all know and love so well, from the P&P story. The Bennet's are a very different and diminished family that we know. I found the quiet but witty Col Fitzwilliam's character arc intriguing. He was at times brutal, but it was always to protect those he loved or right a wrong. The answers to the mystery are slowly revealed. All the villains get their just desserts, some (unfortunately) much later than others. ODC get their HEA, despite themselves. George Darcy's inheritance to Wickham (after learning of his true character) is brilliant! It's long and at times very dark, bu

Excellent! The enjoyed listening to the origin of what we now call the Gothic Novel... it's interesting (and a bit frightening) to hear of the "danger" of excessive novel reading on feminine sensibilities. (Yikkes!) The pabable fear of the Terror and the working classes reading something that could lead to...the fall of the established order of things! The idea of books as living dangerous things. As well as, Anne Radcliffe's explanation in the difference between terror and horror. Love the Scooby Doo reference!

Interesting and wonderful new and familiar characters. The Hurst's improved, marriage with Caroline out of the house. The constant mispronouncing Longbourn as LongBURN? Made me frustrated and cringe, it's unacceptable, in a P&P variation.

Story
A ride on a stormy day has disastrous consequences for Fitzwilliam Darcy, who finds himself grievously injured and bedridden–and with no memory of Elizabeth Bennet, the woman to whom he has been married for several years. Recovery is slow as his head injury has made it difficult for him to read and write, and a suspected fracture in his leg has made walking painful.

Caroline B. although brief is a pleasant surprise. Bingley shows himself more resolute concerning Jane. Darcy resigned to his recent disability told in flashbacks (the word crippled was used often until the 1970's). He still is prideful. He insults Elizabeth but apologizes. Darcy is not the only one to suffer a life threatening illness, with life altering results. Wickham is up to no good. E. after refusing the pompous Mr Collins, proposal. Still he leaves Netherfield, although not without paying calls to take his leave. ODC have much to overcome before their HEA. A good listen. Despite the angst, I really enjoyed the variation!

Story
In April 2002, Janine Latus' youngest sister, Amy, wrote a note and taped it to the inside of her desk drawer. "Today Ron Ball and I are romantically involved", it read, "but I fear I have placed myself at risk in a variety of ways. Based on his criminal past, writing this out just seems like the smart thing to do. If I am missing or dead this obviously has not protected me...."

Expecting a true crime story, not a autobiography.
Reviewed: 09-21-22
I was expecting the story of Amy Latus, the library book group had it as "True Crime" Story with the title: "If I am missing or dead." Amy was mentioned here and there. Long distance phone calls, as the author moves out of state to attend college. Amy moves in to Atlanta with her mother, who has got a divorce. Amy finishes high school, eventually marries and she works full time, pays the bills and he drinks and gets fired from job after job. She gets beaten from time to time, but he is always sorry after. Later after leaving and returning, she eventually divorces. I was expecting a story of Amy, and how she meets her boyfriend, their relationship, her going missing, the police investigation and the eventual discovery of her body. How her boyfriend, a convicted goes on trial . A little more than 3 hours in and I could stand the thought of another six hours of the author's life. I had heard less than twenty minutes about Amy, if that. Yes, both sisters were in abusive relationships, emotional and physical one got out. Sadly, Amy didn't. I have seldom not finished listening to a book, I wish I had got the book at the library, rather than waste the credit, it was certainly not worth it.
