Tedious book. Great narrator, but...

...even Xe Sands can't make this ponderous bag of literary rocks achieve animation. Wayyyy too much focus on religion (for me, personally). I'm an introvert. I sometimes devote *days* to introspection. This book made me want to throw a loud street party. The parts (not nearly enough, descriptive enough or informative enough) out in nature were what interested me. Otherwise? Boring. Predictable.

Well-written and researched, but omg.. this guy was SO twisted and cold.. it was a really hard listen. The "why did this have to happen to me" questions were mind boggling. "Jerry's so sensitive." 😱🤯 Narration was okay, with the exception of some mangled pronunciation.

Story
The beautiful young woman is perfectly still, curled up in the trunk of the car, her long dark hair hiding her face. Her cotton blouse has ridden up a little, revealing two small dots an inch apart on her back. Just like the others. Guilt has kept FBI Agent Tori Hunter away from her home in Manchester Bay, Minnesota for 20 years, ever since her twin sister disappeared on the Fourth of July, when the girls should have been together. But when she receives an anonymous newspaper clipping about another missing girl, Genevieve, Tori is dragged back to the past.

Put me (literally) to sleep. Beyond predictable. Happy I didn't waste even half a credit on this "bargain". Narration is painful. Two stars because I'm feeling kind.

Story
At first, they struggle to escape. Then a torrent of blows rains down upon their bodies until their eyes cloud over in final agony. The killer shows no remorse - just a twisted need to witness each victim's last terrified moments. Public defender Rachel Wainwright is struggling to reopen a decades-old case, convinced that the wrong man is in prison. Homicide detective Deke Morgan doesn't want to agree. But if Rachel's hunch is correct, whoever fatally bludgeoned young, beautiful Annie Dawson 30 years ago could be the source of a new string of brutal slayings.

DNF. Narration is bizarre

I've known numerous people from Eastern Tennessee, and I've visited Nashville. These "accents" are so extreme, so over the top, it makes listening to this unbearable.

Story
As a sixteen-year-old, Tessa Cartwright was found in a Texas field, barely alive amid a scattering of bones, with only fragments of memory as to how she got there. Ever since, the press has pursued her as the lone surviving “Black-Eyed Susan, the nickname given to the murder victims because of the yellow carpet of wildflowers that flourished above their shared grave. Tessa’s testimony about those tragic hours put a man on death row.

I love mysteries and thrillers. This book, though... um, no. It's rather repulsive, then utterly disjointed. My interest drifts so easily, which is atypical. I did get it this title on sale, so will archive and possibly revisit a few years in the future. Glad I didn't waste a credit.

They never considered how his wife might react, or that by the end of the summer a man would be dead. But Blakely always got her way, and the others followed her lead—even when they knew it was dead wrong. The girls had been friends from day one at Camp Pendleton, a haven for gifted children. But their senior summer was different. When Mr. Crosby, the handsome tennis coach, wound up murdered after a reckless lie, Blakely, Grace, Meg, and Thera swore themselves to secrecy. And never spoke to each other again.

Story
Late one winter afternoon in upstate New York, George Clare comes home to find his wife killed and their three-year-old daughter alone—for how many hours?—in her room across the hall. He had recently, begrudgingly, taken a position at a nearby private college (far too expensive for local kids to attend) teaching art history, and moved his family into a tight-knit, impoverished town that has lately been discovered by wealthy outsiders in search of a rural idyll.

In my view, this book brilliantly describes a high-functioning malignant psychopath, his victim radar, one emotional connection, strategic long games and exit strategy. Narration is superb.

I wondered - at first - if this book a satirical take on domestic thrillers, but no... this author is seriously writing "I spited him enough by murdering him." *spited*? 😆 The narration is similarly illiterate.

Story
When animal behaviorist Guy Schermerhorn demonstrates on a TV game show that he has taught Sam, his juvenile chimp, to speak in sign language, Aimee Villard, an undergraduate at Guy's university, is so taken with the performance that she applies to become his assistant. A romantic and intellectual attachment soon morphs into an interspecies love triangle that pushes hard at the boundaries of consciousness and the question of what we know and how we know it. What if it were possible to speak to the members of another species - to converse with them?
