About this listen

The classic Western, now newly repackaged as part of Bantam's Louis L'Amour's Lost Treasures program - with never-before-heard material from Louis and his son, Beau L'Amour.

It was just a godforsaken mountainside, but no place on earth was richer in silver. For a bustling, enterprising America, this was the great bonanza. The dreamers, the restless, the builders, the vultures - they were lured by the glittering promise of instant riches and survived the brutal hardships of a mining camp to raise a legendary boom town. But some sought more than wealth. Val Trevallion, a loner haunted by a violent past. Grita Redaway, a radiantly beautiful actress driven by an unfulfilled need. Two fiercely independent spirits, together they rose above the challenges of the Comstock to stake a bold claim on the future.

Louis L’Amour’s Lost Treasures is a project created to release some of the author’s more unconventional manuscripts from the family archives. In Louis L’Amour’s Lost Treasures: Volume 1 and Volume 2, Beau L’Amour takes the listener on a guided tour through many of the finished and unfinished short stories, novels, and treatments that his father was never able to publish during his lifetime. L’Amour’s never-before-heard first novel, No Traveller Returns, faithfully completed for this program, is a voyage into danger and violence on the high seas. Additionally, many beloved classics will be rereleased with an exclusive Lost Treasures postscript featuring previously unpublished material, including outlines, plot notes, and alternate drafts. These postscripts tell the story behind the stories that millions of audiences have come to know and cherish.

Comstock load

This is by far one of L’Amour’s best written books, second only to the Sackett Brand. A must read!! I have no idea how many times I’ve listened to the Comstock Lode but it’s a go to when long road trips start.

What can i say

This is long listen, but we'll worth it. Louis L'Amour writes some of the best westerns this is a long listen, took me a weekend to get through it. That's how long it took to read it also. My point, you start it you want to finish it. As always lots of information along the story line, history, knowledge and personality.

L'Amour doesn't disappoint!

I wish he were still around, cranking out even more amazing stories of the men and women who settled this land. Comstock is classic L'Amour telling the story of those who traveled West and settled Virginia city.

I Really Can't Say Enough About Louis L'Amour

What other book might you compare Comstock Lode to and why?

If you appreciate character development and getting lost in a book, I highly recommend Louis L'Amour's Lonesome Gods.

It's another marathon of a book that you won't want to end.

Which scene was your favorite?

1) Beginning of the novel when Grita and Val are kids and he is holding her close to keep her quiet while they are hiding and their mother's are being attacked. -- It literally set the stage for the rest of the novel.

2) Of course when Grita and Val get trapped in the mine and the whole town comes to help free them.

More Entertaining L'Amour.

What made the experience of listening to Comstock Lode the most enjoyable?

L'Amour actually threw in some real twists in this book. Even a key 'bad guy' was drilled by someone other than the star.

What about Erik Singer’s performance did you like?

Singer did a good job in maintaining the different Characters with clear differences in his voice and presentation. He made the book more enjoyable.

Any additional comments?

As with some earlier L'Amour books (like The Walking Drum) he would get bogged down in too much details about things that the average reader would know nothing about, and really doesn't care about. There are times when it seems like he is just trying to let you know that he knew a lot. But even with that, this is a good read.
