About this listen

War is the crucible that forges humanity, in its fiery embrace, will he become a hero..or a villain?

As a mercenary with no Divine Core, Xin Sang is resigned to a life of grunt work, fighting the lesser fiends like wyrmspawn that are far beneath the notice of the mighty Ascendants. But when an Archfiend—an Ebon Wyrm—appears and threatens to annihilate his mercenary crew, Xin must rise above his limitations and show them why he's the best.

And why he's been running and hiding for so long.

Xin will conquer the Archfiend's insidious corruption to seize the right to devour and cultivate the power that lies at the intersection of monster and mortal. But will he use those powers for noble pursuits or be swayed by the allure of corruption?

Devour Power

I great take on the genre. The ability to eat monster cores to become one or hybrid if one is nice and makes a pleasant read.

A was pleasantly surprised

This is my first novel from D.B. King and Nick Law and I can tell it won't be the last. The MC was mundane to start but still a good swordsman against lesser fiends, however, no match for higher-level fiends. Those required divine ascendants (mages) in order to defeat. The authors provided an ample backstory him that made it easy to become invested in him. As the story evolved, the MC finds out that it's not just fiends who are the enemy of the people but also a class of mages who consider the people they are sworn to protect with disdain and will slay them for even the minor of annoyance.

I really enjoyed the MC having little patience with their haughty behavior which is where things begin to go sideways for him.

The story pacing moved forward at an even pace and the fiends were of a unique variety.

Alex Perone's performance was stellar, as was Marissa Parness' with the exception of a couple of characters whose pitch was a bit too high which made if difficult to understand without repeating those sections.

I am absolutely looking forward to the next book in the series.

it reads like a really fun Fantasy RPG.

story was great. interesting magic system, good pacing and never got boring. the only thing I wasn't a fan of is how the characters repeat the same super long title / name for person over and over and over again. other than that, it was a great book and I can't wait for the second one.

The meshing of monster and man.

This Chinese LitRPG takes us to a world that a man can suck in his enemy's cores and become a monster/demon/man hybrid.
If you like the Chinese style LitRPG you may want to add this to your library.
I'm giving this book 6.5 out of 5 stars.
