About this listen
In a novella set two years after the events of American Gods, Shadow pays a visit to an ancient Scottish mansion, and finds himself trapped in a game of murder and monsters.
In a Hugo Award-winning short story set in a strangely altered Victorian England, the great detective Sherlock Holmes must solve a most unsettling royal murder.
Two teenage boys crash a party and meet the girls of their dreams and nightmares.
In a Locus Award-winning tale, the members of an excusive epicurean club lament that they've eaten everything that can be eaten, with the exception of a legendary, rare, and exceedingly dangerous Egyptian bird.
Such marvelous creations and more, including a short story set in the world of The Matrix and others set in the worlds of gothic fiction and children's fiction, can be found in this extraordinary collection, which showcases Gaiman's storytelling brilliance as well as his entertaining (and dark) sense of humor. By turns delightful, disturbing, and diverting, Fragile Things is a gift of literary enchantment from one of the most unique writers of our time.

Story
A middle-aged man returns to his childhood home to attend a funeral. He is drawn to the farm at the end of the road, where, when he was seven, he encountered a most remarkable girl, Lettie Hempstock. Forty years earlier, a man committed suicide in a stolen car at this farm at the end of the road. Like a fuse on a firework, his death lit a touchpaper and resonated in unimaginable ways. The darkness was unleashed, something scary and thoroughly incomprehensible to a little boy. And Lettie - magical, comforting, wise beyond her years - promised to protect him, no matter what.

Story
Neil Gaiman has long been inspired by ancient mythology in creating the fantastical realms of his fiction. Now he turns his attention back to the source, presenting a bravura rendition of the great northern tales. In Norse Mythology, Gaiman fashions primeval stories into a novelistic arc that begins with the genesis of the legendary nine worlds; delves into the exploits of the deities, dwarves, and giants; and culminates in Ragnarok, the twilight of the gods and the rebirth of a new time and people.

Story
For the past twenty-five years, Margaret Atwood has written works of striking originality and imagination. In The Blind Assassin, she stretches the limits of her accomplishments as never before, creating a novel that is entertaining and profoundly serious. The novel opens with these simple, resonant words: "Ten days after the war ended, my sister drove a car off the bridge." They are spoken by Iris, whose terse account of her sister Laura's death in 1945 is followed by an inquest report proclaiming the death accidental.

Story
Twenty years ago, 16-year-old Tara Martin disappeared from a small town in the heart of England. Now, her sudden return and the mind-bending tale of where she’s been will challenge our very perception of the truth. For 20 years after Tara Martin disappeared, her parents and her brother, Peter, lived in denial of the grim fact that she was gone for good. Then suddenly on Christmas Day, the doorbell rings at her parents’ home, and there, dishevelled and slightly peculiar looking, Tara stands. It’s a miracle, but alarm bells are ringing for Peter. Tara’s story just does not add up.

Hot on the heels of Gardner Dozois's acclaimed anthology The Book of Swords comes this companion volume devoted to magic. How could it be otherwise? For every Frodo, there is a Gandalf... and a Saruman. For every Dorothy, a Glinda... and a Wicked Witch of the West. What would Harry Potter be without Albus Dumbledore... and Severus Snape? Figures of wisdom and power, possessing arcane, often forbidden knowledge, wizards and sorcerers are shaped - or misshaped - by the potent magic they seek to wield.

Few authors write with such sheer love of story and language as T. C. Boyle, and that is nowhere more evident than in his inventive, wickedly funny, and always entertaining short stories. Here are 14 new tales previously unpublished in book form. By turns mythic and realistic, farcical and tragic, ironic and moving, Boyle's stories have mapped a wide range of human emotions. The stories here reflect his maturing themes.

Fun
Good group of stories by Gaiman. A very fun novella that picks up at the end of American Gods. To be fair, there were a few stories that I found myself getting rather bored with and easily distracted while listening to them. All told, if you like Gaiman you'll enjoy this book.

Came for more Shadow Moon, loved the rest too
I really wanted to hear Neil read "The Monarch of the Glen" - its been a few years since I first read American Gods and I JUST found out this short story existed. It was nice to see things from Shadow again!
As for the rest of the short stories, some are slow, some don't seem too special. The "How to Talk to Girls at Parties" was nowhere near the star of the book, but I'm sure others disagree!
Standouts for me were "Study in Emerald" "The Problem of Susan" "Feeders and Eaters" and "Goliath".
Anything read by Neil Gaiman is an instant get for me - He is a classic storyteller.

Small treasures
I am a fan, so I had a positive bias going into this book. I was not disappointed. The mixture of stories, snippets and poems was eclectic and entertaining. They all shone with Mr. Gaimans rich descriptions, and were easy to visualize. The only retraction is the authors tendency to drop into a 'singsong' cadence occasionally.

great collection
not for the faint of heart, neil gaiman has collected some amazing short stories and poems in this volume. a few of the works would be for "adult" ears only. this should not, however, take enjoyment away from the discerning bibliophile. gaiman creates vividly painted worlds for the reader to explore. his descriptive prose is beyond compare.

Typical Gaiman
Excellent, out of left-field thoughts connected to traditional folk stories wound up with whimsy and a chill of creepiness...so cool and engaging.

admitting to a mild obsession with Neil Gaiman
again, I'm in the empty, emotional vacuum that always follows the completion of a Neil Gaiman book. it's a place where, as the glitter and dust settle back down and slowly dissolve in the soil beneath your shoes, you realize just how painfully ordinary life is, once more.
I want to live inside of Fragile Things. these stories burrow into your bones; wriggling and moaning only to come out in your dreams in blues and grays that frighten and enlighten you. to have the privilege to hear them read by the master himself...well...it's a gift. his stories and his narration are a gift. please have a listen.
