About this listen
In Shock is a riveting first-hand account from a young critical care physician, who in the passage of a moment is transfigured into a dying patient. This transposition, coincidentally timed at the end of her medical training, instantly lays bare the vast chasm between the conventional practice of medicine and the stark reality of the prostrate patient.
Hauntingly perceptive and beautifully written, it allows the listener to transform alongside her, and watch what she discovers in our carefully cultivated, yet often misguided standard of care. The author demonstrates through engaging narrative and laser-sharp wit how the unbearable is borne. She comes to understand the fatal flaws in her profession and in her own past actions as a physician. She also achieves, through unflinching presence, a crystalline vision of a new and better possibility.
Using her exceptional recall, Awdish fashions an elegant, yet urgent call to action. As she finds herself up against the same self-protective partitions she was trained to construct as a medical student and physician, she artfully illuminates the dysfunction of disconnection. Shatteringly personal, and yet wholly universal, she offers a brave roadmap for anyone navigating illness. At the same time, she presents physicians with a new paradigm and rationale for embracing the emotional bond between doctor and patient. All told, she cogently outlines the redemptive possibilities of dismantling the barriers to connection in all relationships.

But when a new admission to the critical care unit almost died his first night on call, he found himself scrambling. Visions of mastery quickly gave way to hopes of simply surviving hospital life, where confidence was hard to come by and no amount of med school training could dispel the terror of facing actual patients.

Story
Sometimes in medicine the only way to know what is truly going on in a patient is to operate, to look inside with one's own eyes. This audio is exploratory surgery on medicine itself, laying bare a science not in its idealized form, but as it actually is - complicated, perplexing, and profoundly human. Atul Gawande offers an unflinching view from the scalpel's edge, where science is ambiguous, information is limited, the stakes are high. In dramatic and revealing stories of patients and doctors, he explores how deadly mistakes occur and why good surgeons go bad.

Forensic pathologist Janis Amatuzio first began recording the stories told to her by patients, police officers, and other doctors because she felt that no one spoke for the dead. She believed the real experience of death, namely the spiritual and otherworldly experiences of those near death and their loved ones, was ignored by the medical professionals, who thought of death as simply the cessation of breath. She knew there was more.

For a pediatric neurosurgeon working in the medical minefield of the brain—in which a single millimeter in every direction governs something that makes us essentially human—every day presents the challenge, and the opportunity, to give a new lease on life to a child for whom nothing is yet fully determined and all possibilities still exist.

As a seasoned paramedic and union leader, Anthony Almojera thought he could handle anything his job threw at him. Like many medical first responders, he came from a troubled background and carried the traumas of the city as well as its triumphs. He had grown up in the rough-and-tumble Park Slope of the 1980s, been homeless for a time, and had watched murder, addiction, and hopelessness consume those closest to him. But he had dedicated his life to helping people in need, and while every day was filled with tragedy—stabbings, shootings, accidents, suicides—it also brought moments of uplift.

As a doctor myself, I cried.
As an OB/Gyn, this was such a moving story. I cried several times. We are having a book club on this book with several of our med students and residents. The paid narrator pronounced FASCIA wrong a few times which was amusing. But Dr. Awdish brings an important light on empathy, compassion, and how we communicate as healthcare providers with our patients. This is a must-read for everyone in the medical community.

Excellent book that I hope anyone in healthcare reads. Dr. Awdish's experience and her ability to put it into purpose in creating new education for practitioners to impact healthcare is fantastic. She brings back the much-needed focus on empathy, the patient experience, but also of teaching, allowing and expecting healthcare providers to be emotionally available during care. I loved this book and recommend it highly.

Real and refreshing for anyone in medicine
This book spoke to so many challenging feelings and emotions that come up during medical training. I look forward to discussing the book with colleagues, and I'm hopeful that the culture of medicine is gradually changing as these experiences are shared in the light.

Great read
As a physician myself, I could relate to many of the points presented by the author. The book was easy to listen to and had a nice flow.
It’s easy for healthcare providers to prejudge patients before they even meet them. This is true in all fields of medicine. My hope is to find a way to change this culture at my workplace. Reading this book has provided me with some insight.

A must read for health care professionals
The story is powerful and gripping. I couldn’t put it down until I knew what would befall her next. But more importantly, as a doctor, this should be required reading. So true to life—it’s what we say, it’s what we’re taught, it’s how we act. So much of this was something I’ve seen or heard or done. Hearing how it sounds from the other side of the bed is so important to being better. I sincerely hope we’ve changed since I was in training 20 years ago—we can’t be like this anymore. It hurts us, it hurts our families and worst of all, it hurts our patients.
