LEGENDARY AGENT JAMES BOND CONFRONTS AN ENEMY UNLIKE ANY HE’S FACED BEFORE
James Bond is not an easily intimidated man, but it’s hard not to feel unnerved in the presence of Mr. Big. A ruthless Harlem gangster who uses superstition and fear to control his vast criminal empire, he’s also one of SMERSH’s top American operatives.
Mr. Big has been smuggling British pirate treasure to New York from a remote Jamaican island and funneling the proceeds to Moscow. With help from Solitaire, Mr. Big’s beautiful and enigmatic Creole fortune teller, and his old friend Felix Leiter of the CIA, 007 must locate the crime lord’s hideout, sabotage his operation, and reclaim the pirate hoard for England.

Story
M laid down his pipe and stared at it tetchily. 'We have no choice. We're just going to bring forward this other chap you've been preparing. But you didn't tell me his name.' 'It's Bond, sir,' the Chief of Staff replied. 'James Bond.' One body. Three bullets. 007 floats in the waters of Marseille, killed by an unknown hand. It's time for a new agent to step up. Time for a new weapon in the war against organised crime. It's time for James Bond to earn his licence to kill.

Ian Fleming's greatest creation, James Bond, has had an enormous and ongoing impact on our culture. What Bond represents about ideas of masculinity, the British national psyche and global politics has shifted over time, as has the interpretation of the life of his author. But Fleming himself was more mysterious and subtle than anything he wrote.

It was a strong face, certainly—the eyes pale grey and very cold, the mouth was hard, the dark hair-grey-streaked now—still fell in the authentic comma over the forehead. This is how John Pearson reacted to his first encounter with the real James Bond, an encounter probably unique in the annals of thriller writing. He went on to write the bestselling authorized biography of Ian Fleming. At the time, like most of the world he assumed that James Bond was nothing more than a character in Fleming's highly charged imagination.

When Sam Spade gets drawn into the Maltese Falcon case, we know what to expect: straight talk, hard questions, no favors, and no way for anyone to get underneath the protective shell he wears like a second skin. We know that his late partner, Miles Archer, was a son of a bitch; that Spade is sleeping with Archer's wife, Iva; that his tomboyish secretary, Effie Perine, is the only innocent in his life. What we don't know is how Spade became who he is. Spade & Archer completes the picture.

Two little girls stand with their heads bowed in my living room. I’m told they’re my granddaughters. Daisy is nine, and Alice seven. Daisy is the spitting image of her mother. This is the first time I’ve met them since my daughter and I fell out after she married that waste of space, Vince. They’ve come to live with me because their mother — my daughter — was murdered. In her own home while they slept close by. I think Vince killed her. But the police can’t prove it. I’ve always known he was no good. He treated my daughter like dirt. I said he’d cheat on her — but she wouldn’t listen.

Story
In 1957, as the Cold War raged, Ian Fleming took a respite from writing James Bond to craft a work of nonfiction every bit as tense as a Bond adventure. Aided by an ex-MI5 agent and International Diamond Security Organization operative going by the alias “John Blaize,” Fleming chronicled the IDSO’s infiltration of the “million-carat network”―the world’s most notorious diamond smuggling ring.

Ian Fleming's greatest creation, James Bond, has had an enormous and ongoing impact on our culture. What Bond represents about ideas of masculinity, the British national psyche and global politics has shifted over time, as has the interpretation of the life of his author.

J.R.R. Tolkien famously described the Second Age of Middle-earth as a ‘dark age, and not very much of its history is (or need be) told’. And for many years readers would need to be content with the tantalizing glimpses of it found within the pages of The Lord of the Rings and its appendices, including the forging of the Rings of Power, the building of the Barad-dûr and the rise of Sauron.

Narrator choice
Who knows what goes thru someone’s mind when choosing a female narrator for one of the most male characters in literature? Aside from this wild miscasting, this narrator brings nothing to the listening experience except groans when her accents for characters keep one from engaging with the story. I cannot really rate this novel because it didn’t resemble any other audio productions of Fleming’s Bond. Too sad.

It's Bond.....But
The second recording of the Bond Collection was good, but not great. This particular novel was not one of my favorites and unfortunately the narration did not change my opinion. As much as I admire Adjoa Andoh's immense talent, this was not the right story for her. She did a good job but listening to Bond with a woman's voice made it difficult to stay interested. I tried to keep an open mind about a female narrator, but kept thinking this should be narrated by a male. Maybe if she had done the female parts and a male did the rest of the narration, I would have been more involved with the story. Overall it was good, but....
One thing this narration did was bring back memories of when I was in New Orleans when the movie was being filmed and Roger Moore debuted as James Bond. I was lucky to see part of the filming and it will be something I will not forget.

A Rough Bond Audiobook
I spent much of the book thinking about what I would leave as a review. The story itself was great. The second in the series and learning more about who Bond is. If you're a fan of the movies you'll note parts of the story that are the same and others that they used in other films.
Performance wise, many of the other reviews are correct with their assessment. This is more like a radio drama at times then an audio book. The character voices at times are thick and hard to understand and do not quite land. She was very skilled performer, but don't feel like it worked for this project.
What is very odd to me is that not long ago there were several different versions of the Bond books available by Audible which have all been taken down. I've been reading rave reviews about the Simon Vance narrated audiobooks from several years beck. Blackstone is still releasing these new, edited versions and quite honestly, I don't know if I'll try the next in the series, Moonraker.
If you want my recommendation, save your credit for a different novel or series and find a 2000s copy of these audio books.

Good and amusing
The narrator did a fine job on most of the characters but a few were a little off and kind of silly. Felix Leiter was portrayed very different from what I'm used to and imagine. It seemed quite clear the narrator was British and did better with those accents. Not an easy book to narrate. Overall I found it entertaining.

The movie was far better
I now understand why it took so long to have this movie made, itneeded major overhaul on the script : The lack of action… also Race swapping solitaire, and Felix’s African-American slang dialogue … had some really good bones, but needed work also needed the culture to shift after the civil rights movement. Fleming was ahead of his time on this one.

They got the wrong narrator.
I could not stand the narrators choice of voice for Felix, it took away from the story for me. It would have been better if they got different voice performers for Bond and Felix.
