About this listen

Kate Winthrop, the only child of a wealthy shipping magnate, has the course of her life charted for her by her parents. She's expected to marry well and produce a successor to the Winthrop empire. But Kate has a very different path in mind. Her true passion lies with photography - and with women.

Alone in the city after losing her brother, Sicilian immigrant Giuliana Russo starts working for the Winthrops as a maid. Despite their different social status, Kate and Giuliana become friends, much to the dismay of Kate's parents.

As the connection between the two women grows, a devastating earthquake hits San Francisco and ignites fires that sweep through the city for three days and nights.

Will the disaster shatter their tentative feelings for each other, or will they find the courage to save each other's lives - and their hearts?

Contains mature themes.

Great story

I LOVED this book. I enjoyed that an actual historic event provided the backdrop for this story. It was nerve wracking, sweet, it made me gasp and cheer. I just flat out enjoyed it.

What a courageous story

Loved this book from the beginning until the end. Kate is one brave and sassy woman. Gulliana was irresistibly loyal and has a quiet strength that I adored. Ms. Cook narration was flawless!!! Especially the accents!

P.S. There is an epic Titanic scene, can you find it?

Going into this one blind is a trip.

I did not read the plot summery. I could tell from the cover it was a period piece, but I wasn't expecting historical events.. and I guess I learned a lot about history in a way.

That aside, this story brought me back to my favorite series by this author. It was very detailed and informative and a bit unbelievable given the amount of things that happen to the main characters. But it was good and the scenes were diverse and fun to hear play out. I would completely recommend this one to anyone who's interested.

Beautiful!

I read a review of this book and it gave it only 2 stars because it didn’t have sex in it. If you want sex in every romance you read or listen to then read/ listen to erotica. This is one of my favorite Books if Jae’s. Samantha Cook brought some of my favorite characters to life. I really like historical romances and this is at the top of my list. It didn’t need a sex scene to make it sensual, sexy and beautiful. Well written and you could actually feel the fear and adversity the characters had to overcome. I look forward to a story about Lucy Hamilton Sharpe. Maybe with a guest spot for Kate and Giuliana! Thanks Jae for putting this on audio. Well done!

Definitely more than one fire in this book

As usual, Jae knocked it outta the park with this one. She really knows how to pull the reader in and build the story through such compelling characters. Had me feeling like I was in the fire with them lol.

Amazing Depiction of 1906 San Francisco

I have grown to love Jae’s historical romances and adventures. They are meticulously researched and the narrator Samantha Cook adds so much to the story of women struggling to make it in a man’s world. Kate Winthrop is the daughter of a rich shipping magnate who what’s to be a newspaper photographer. When Giuliana Russo a Sicilian immigrant begins working as a maid the two become fast friends. A story of working through confusing feelings and discovering desires not experienced before. The addition of Dr. Lucy Hamilton Sharpe, the granddaughter of Luke and Nora Hamilton, adds so much to the novel. Wonderful story of survival and personal growth and achievement.
