Correia and Butcher and Maberry, OH MY!

And Hoyt and Torgersen, too!
This is some of the best hours of audio your audible credit can buy!
You get solo stories of Owen, Julie, Tripp and Agent Franks!
You get a story with Ben Franklin!
Three different narrators do a great job.
A highly enjoyable expansion of the MHI universe.
This will go into frequently revisited pile.

Mostly entertaining

While the various authors did well in creating imaginative and vivid scenes for their characters to interact in and with, the actual stories themselves were entertaining but not groundbreaking (with a couple of exceptions).

Some of the stories written in today's time did a really great job of relating their short stories back to events and people from Correia's MHI books. I always enjoy that, so it made the stories more fun for me.

While I won't give any spoilers, I will identify one of the stories as my standout favorite. "The Gift" by Steve Diamond, about two Vatican hunters, is rich in story and detail. I was pretty much drawn into its mysterious feel throughout. It is actually one of my favorite short stories ever read.

And on the other end, one of the stories was just outright lame. While most of the authors tried to maintain the narrative tone of the stories written by Larry Correia, Jody Lynn Nye failed completely with with "Mr. Natural". She tried to show that hippies can be more virtuous and effective people of action than trained soldiers in an obvious and badly contrived social statement.

Narration of this book shined. Oliver Wyman, of course, makes his return for most of the stories. But for the stories centered around female protagonists, the women who read them for us were outstanding (even in Mr. Natural, a story I otherwise disliked greatly).

Great Anthology

As with any anthology, there are some stories that are better than others. While I’m not going to pick out any stories, favorites or not, I will say that there is plenty of variety. There are some new characters, and some different perspectives from established ones. Overall the book is great.
Oliver Wyman continues to be outstanding, and Kristine Hvam and Bailey Carr also provide good narration. I haven’t heard either of their work before, but I would be happy to listen to more from both.

A little more of Owen!

If you enjoy monster hunters, you can’t live without these stories as well. Great addition!

Short Story Winner

There are only a couple reasons I usually buy short stories- because there is one story from an author in a series I read and/or I'm looking for someone new to read. Many times they are a bust. Because I have, or do read, most of the authors in this book I kept my fingers crossed. I shouldn't have worried. I loved every story in this book! Each one was well crafted and took on a character in this much loved (by me anyway) series. I hope that there is more like this to come.

My bad

I did not realize that this was short stories. I don’t care for any short stories.
So I’ll be returning this book.
If you like short stories then this would be a great book. Narration is spot on.
Just not for me

Mostly solid and true to MH tone

Mostly decent shorts connected to the MH verse, and even starring some of the MH characters.
I preferred the ones with actual plots and beginnings, middles, and endings; some shorts seemed to care more about the monster killing atmosphere than any real story. I wish Oliver Wyman had narrated them all because the female narration fell flat whenever narrating known characters like Franks. It also felt like the authors challenged each other to pick an accent and write it into the story… just because
(sometimes it worked, sometimes not so much).

If you like anthologies, consider Noir Fatale, containing various fantasy/ fiction and including some of the same authors (especially Larry Coriea writing Bombshell from the Grimnoir).

1. Thistle by Larry Correia- a complete story with Owen ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
2. Small Problems by Jim Butcher- newbie MH janitor, demons, and rats⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
3. Darkness Under the Mountain by Mike Kuper- excellent MH horror vampire vibe ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
4. A Knight of the Enchanted Forest by Jessica Day George-
Trailer park grudge match between elves and gnomes. Funny.⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
5. The Manticore Sanction by John C Wright- confusing monster culture clash with Imhotep & Grendl⭐️
6. The Dead Yard by Maude Broadus- “come and get some!” pulp and Rasta accents as Trip, Owen, and Holly head to Jamaica.⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
7. The Bride by Brad Torgersen- Ben Franklin, French accents, backstory connected to Franks⭐️⭐️⭐️
8. She B**ch by Faith Hunter- Jane Yellowrock short barely edited to call it a MHI short. Hard Pass.⭐️
9. Mr. Natural by Jody Lynn Nye- Jolly Green Giant veggie short in a meat & potatoes anthology. ⭐️
10. Son of the Father by Quincy J Allen-Shafer brothers find hobgoblins in the cornfield⭐️⭐️
11. The Troll Factory by Alex Shvartsman- “Black Neo” gamer, Russian accents, and trolls.⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
12. Keep Kaiju Weird by May Kumiko- awfully cute for a half century old kitsune enlisting Franks⭐️⭐️⭐️
13. The Gift by Steve Diamond- Vatican hunters give good religious horror⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
14. Case of Ghostly Spectre by John Ringo-London Underground hunting midst classes.⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
15. Huffman Strikes Back by Bryan Thomas Schmidt and Julie Frost- plays like fanfic that values Fbombs and fight scenes over all else… but does pit Owen against the Legion of Dim Doom⭐️⭐️
16. Hunter Born by Sarah Hoyt- teenage Julie never makes it to the prom-
needed that Buffyesque snark to pep things up.⭐️⭐️
17. Hitter’s Dog by Jonathan Mayberry-Franks gets the Mayberry monster treatment while battling Nazis. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
