About this listen
When it comes to sex, common wisdom holds that men roam while women crave closeness and commitment. But in this provocative, headline-making book, Daniel Bergner turns everything we thought we knew about women's arousal and desire inside out. Drawing on extensive research and interviews with renowned behavioral scientists, sexologists, psychologists, and everyday women, he forces us to reconsider long-held notions about female sexuality.
This bold and captivating journey into the world of female desire explores answers to such thought-provoking questions as: Are women perhaps the less monogamous sex? What effect do intimacy and emotional connection really have on lust? What is the role of narcissism - the desire to be desired - in female sexuality? Are political gains for women ("No means no") detrimental in the bedroom? And is the hunt for a "female Viagra" anything but a search for the cure for monogamy?
Bergner goes behind the scenes of some of the most groundbreaking experiments on sexuality today and confronts us with controversial, sometimes uncomfortable findings. Incendiary, profoundly insightful, and brilliantly illuminating, What Do Women Want? will change the conversation about women and sex, and is sure to spark dynamic discussion for years to come.

Game is an adaptive set of social skills and best practices in navigating intersexual dynamics in a modern sexual marketplace.

Story
In the early 1960s, JFK declared that science would take us to the moon. He also declared that science would make the “remote reaches of the mind accessible” and cure psychiatric illness with breakthrough medications. We were walking on the moon within the decade. But today, psychiatric cures continue to elude us—as does the mind itself. Why is it that we still don’t understand how the mind works? What is the difference between the mind and the brain? And given all that we still don’t know, how can we make insightful, transformative choices about our psychiatric conditions?

Why are women more verbal than men? Why do women remember details of fights that men can't remember at all? Why do women tend to form deeper bonds with their female friends than men do with their male counterparts? These and other questions have stumped both sexes throughout the ages. Now, pioneering neuropsychiatrist Louann Brizendine, M.D., brings together the latest findings to show how the unique structure of the female brain determines how women think and what they value.

Based one of the largest studies of human mating ever undertaken, encompassing more than 10,000 people of all ages from 37 cultures worldwide, The Evolution of Desire is the first work to present a unified theory of human mating behavior.

Since Darwin's day, we've been told that sexual monogamy comes naturally to our species. Hack Her: True Female Nature 101 is an introductory book describing female nature, at a novice level. The title “Hack Her” is wordplay on the term “hacker”. The female mind is uncharted like the Dark Web of the internet; people know little to nothing about the modern female psyche. Men who are aware of this “Dark Web” (the mind of a woman) are called “Coders” because they have the cheat “codes” to manipulate female nature to their will. “Coders” understand that with great power comes even greater responsibility!

In his landmark best seller The Tipping Point, Malcolm Gladwell redefined how we understand the world around us. Now, in Blink, he revolutionizes the way we understand the world within. Blink is a book about how we think without thinking, about choices that seem to be made in an instant, in the blink of an eye, that actually aren't as simple as they seem. Why are some people brilliant decision makers, while others are consistently inept?

The Latin term for the female genitalia, pudendum, means “parts for which you should be ashamed”. Until 1651, ovaries were called female testicles. The fallopian tubes are named for a man. Named, claimed, and shamed: Welcome to the story of the female body, as penned by men. Today, a new generation of (mostly) women scientists is finally redrawing the map. With modern tools and fresh perspectives, they’re looking at the organs traditionally bound up in reproduction—the uterus, ovaries, vagina—and seeing within them a new biology of change and resilience.

Johnson describes the feeling of "bleeding out" unable to tell where she stopped and where her partner began. A self-confessed "psycho girlfriend," she was influenced by many emotional factors from her past. She recalls her path through a dysfunctional, destructive relationship, while recounting the experiences that brought her to her breaking point.

That is, until Emily Nagoski’s Come As You Are, which used groundbreaking science and research to prove that the most important factor in creating and sustaining a sex life filled with confidence and joy is not what the parts are or how they’re organized but how you feel about them.

Story
In the 1990s, a “purity industry” emerged out of the white evangelical Christian culture. Purity rings, purity pledges, and purity balls came with a dangerous message: girls are potential sexual “stumbling blocks” for boys and men, and any expression of a girl’s sexuality could reflect the corruption of her character. This message traumatized many girls - resulting in anxiety, fear, and experiences that mimicked the symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder - and trapped them in a cycle of shame.

This remarkable memoir is the classic account of the transgender journey. It is all the more extraordinary because it is the life story of a figure who, it seemed, seamlessly and publicly charted a course through the English establishment - James Morris, outstanding journalist, historian and travel writer, famed for a peerless writing style. But all the while he was concealing a very different inner world: from the age of four he felt that, despite his body, he was really a girl.

Interesting Book, TERRIBLE Narration!!!
Would you listen to What Do Women Want? again? Why?
No, I would read the book, the Narration was distracting and just plain terrible.
Were the concepts of this book easy to follow, or were they too technical?
A little of both, not exactly a light "read" but very interesting.
Would you be willing to try another one of Charles Pasternak’s performances?
NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
Realizing what my wife probably wants...anything but me.
Any additional comments?
Depressing to understand that the person that you love is just frankly not interested in you...unfortunately it aligns with reality so the book states what has been obvious to me for three-quarters of my 15 year marriage.

Narrator is terrible
I feel like the narrator tried to sound sensual because he knew the book was about sex. It was awful to hear him draw out vowels and clip consonants in an effort to sound sexy? It's science, not erotica! Also his impressions of women's voices were not only insulting but pretty laughable.

Well researched
I believe that the information was well researched but occasionally the author repeats a line to emphasize the statement. I find it annoying and suggestive that we are not paying attention. Outside of the small annoying parts. I found it to be very science based information and allowed me to understand it without playing along in hope's to hear something more than just sexy fluff.

Interesting Content Narration Downside
Where does What Do Women Want? rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
It's OK. Too many testimonials from women not enough science/studies.
What three words best describe Charles Pasternak’s performance?
If you like borderline erotic content read to you in a overenunciated, nasally fashion this book might be for you. Narration was a bit irritating.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
Lots of good first hand accounts of supposedly what women want. Spoiler alert woman want a lot of different things and it doesn't line up neatly with cultural narratives. Just one observation about these types of books is that the "break through" always is monogamy is not the norm. When I hear this I always think about world leaders, powerful businessman, celebrities. Basically people who can get whoever they want into bed. Why do these people always end up getting married if monogamy isn't somewhat normal or wanted?
Any additional comments?
Some people commented this book is depressing, but I think it just reflects how complex human beings are. It's nothing to fear. This book focuses on what women want in terms of sex, but this is just one piece of a relationship. Also, feelings change, what women want changes, testimonials are akin to a snapshot in time.

Well? What Do Women Want??
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
I would not recommend this book, as it does not result in any clearer understanding of what women want than the average man already has - at least, if I am 'average'.
If you’ve listened to books by Daniel Bergner before, how does this one compare?
Not applicable.
Have you listened to any of Charles Pasternak’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
No. However I thought the narration excellent on this one.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
I was especially moved by the relation of a couple of stories about women who, while know what the 'wished' for, were and are hampered by society's mores (although what they wished for seems to me to be quite harmless, our Victorian attitudes make it socially risky for women to express themselves).
Any additional comments?
I found it disappointing that, while the question "What Do Women Want" is a long-time urgent one for everybody, a book that purports to tell us the answer left me with the exact same understanding, and questions, as I already had. Apparently there is a good reason why nobody knows.
