Story
Stefan Zweig's memoir, The World of Yesterday, recalls the golden age of prewar Europe - its seeming permanence, its promise and its devastating fall with the onset of two world wars. Zweig's passionate, evocative prose paints a stunning portrait of an era that danced brilliantly on the brink of extinction. It is an unusually humane account of Europe from the closing years of the 19th century through to World War II, seen through the eyes of one of the most famous writers of his era.

An account that must be heard!
Reviewed: 17-02-2024
Just like Primo Levi's If This Is a Man and Viktor Frank's Man's Search for Meaning, this is an account that must be heard. Impossible to grasp by anyone who hasn't experienced it directly, the holocaust remains a pivotal point in man's evolution, potentially marking its devaluation point, as ideas of the mind managed to drive humans to commit unfathomable atrocities in an industrial scale over their fellow humans. These accounts remind us how far we can go when we recognise our neighbour as The Other...

Story
Though unappreciated in his own time, Johann Sebastian Bach has ascended to Olympian heights, the verdict of contemporary audiences long since overruled by succeeding generations of music lovers. But what makes his music great? In this series of 32 lectures, a working composer and musicologist brings his exceptional teaching skills to the task of helping you hear the extraordinary sweep of Bach's music. You'll understand the compositional language that enabled him to compose such extravagant, unbridled music while still maintaining precise control of every aspect - beat, melody, melodic repetition, interaction, and harmony.

In If This Is a Man Primo Levi describes his deportation to Poland and his 20 months in Auschwitz. In The Truce he describes his long journey to Italy at the end of the war through Russia and Central Europe. 'What has survived in Levi's writing isn't just his memory of the unbearable, but also... his delight in what made the world exquisite to him. He was himself a magically endearing man, the most delicately forceful enchanter I've ever known.' (Philip Roth)

One of the most important books ever written
Reviewed: 09-03-2022
This book had an immense impact on my life while listening to it. It's one the most important documents to be written and needs to be heard by as many people as possible.
Primo Levi describes in a chilling poetic and accurate detail his experience in the death camp and the experience of being reduced down to a prisoner doubtfully still human. In contrary to other tales of this dark periodvin history, Levi manages to the transport you until you feel like you're there with him he does that by recounting the psychological state during this time and diving into details such as the type of dreams he had in the camp. It's fascinating. Tragic and sad but at the same time hopeful and inspiring.

Neil Young is a singular figure in the history of rock and pop culture generally in the last four decades. Reflective, insightful, and disarmingly honest, in Waging Heavy Peace he writes about his life and career. From his youth in Canada to his crazy journey out to California, through Buffalo Springfield and Crosby, Stills, & Nash, to his massively successful solo career and his reemergence as the patron saint of grunge on to his role today as one of the last uncompromised and uncompromising survivors of rock & roll - this is Neil’s story told in his own words.

Still relevant and captivating even though it was written 160 years ago!! The narrator is wonderful and animates the story so well. A huge advantage to get the character names correct prenounciation. Prob would've have messed that up if I was only reading it. So strange that the very last line of the book seems to have vanished??

Story
A magisterial, single volume history of the greatest conflict the world has ever known by our foremost military historian. The Second World War began in August 1939 on the edge of Manchuria and ended there exactly six years later with the Soviet invasion of northern China. The war in Europe appeared completely divorced from the war in the Pacific and China, and yet events on opposite sides of the world had profound effects.
