Story
Sally Diamond cannot understand why what she did was so strange. She was only doing what her father told her to do, to put him out with the rubbish when he died. Now Sally is the centre of attention, not only from the hungry media and worried police, but also a sinister voice from a past she has no memory of. As she begins to discover the horrors of her childhood, recluse Sally steps into the world for the first time, making new friends, finding independence, and learning that people don't always mean what they say.

An excellent book, it kept my attention the whole time I was listening. I'm sure it will stay with me for a long time. A very sad story, but it wasn't sad all the way through. Characters were very believable, narration was perfect. I'm going to look for more by this author.

Story
When Senior Detective Antigone Pollard moves to the coastal town of Deception Bay, she is still in shock and grief. Back in Melbourne, one of her cases had gone catastrophically wrong, and to escape the guilt and the haunting memories, she'd requested a transfer to the quiet town she'd grown up in. But there are some things you can't run from. A month into her new life, she is targeted by a would-be rapist at the pub, and realises why there have been no convictions following a spate of similar sexual attacks in the surrounding district.

Story
Julie Goodwin was catapulted into our hearts as the first-ever winner of MasterChef Australia. In many ways her win was unlikely. As a child Julie adored music and art, but her career began in youth work, including in a juvenile detention centre housing troubled boys and a toxic all-male staff. After her three sons were born, she and her husband started an IT business. Then came MasterChef - a record-breaking juggernaut of a show. It was by all appearances, a successful, rewarding life. But under the surface relentless pressure from Julie's outer and inner worlds was taking its toll.

At times confronting, this is Julie's truth. A deeper insight into someone I have followed in the public eye since 2009 and that famous Masterchef win. I went through all of the emotions whilst listening, and didn't want it to end. Thank you for helping to end the stigma around seeking treatment for mental health. Now I'm off to buy the paper version of this book.

I enjoyed the story, though I guessed at the ending, and I never guess the endings. I really disliked the voice narration for the main character, made her sound needy and whiny. This changed as I grew to like her (Emily) more, enough to finish the story. The insight into bipolar was interesting. I would read more by this author.

Great story, it kept me on the edge of my seat, and I am happy with the ending. I'm really enjoying Australian novels, and the narration was perfect. I don't even know what the other Jo Dixon book is about but that's where my next credit is going. I do wonder about the character of Lena, though. Are there actually people like that in the world? She was the only character I had trouble believing. But maybe I'm just sheltered. Anyway - well done, Jo Dixon - I loved your book!

Story
Nic is a 45-year-old trivia buff, amateur nail artist and fairy godmother to the neighbourhood's stray cats. She's also the owner of a decade's worth of daily newspapers, enough clothes and shoes to fill Big W three times over and a pen collection which, if laid end-to-end, would probably circle her house twice. The person she's closest to in the world is her beloved niece Lena, who she meets for lunch every Sunday. One day Nic fails to show up. When Lena travels to her aunt's house to see if Nic's all right, she gets the shock of her life.

Great Aussie family story
Reviewed: 17-11-2023
I really enjoyed this book, finished in 2 days. The characters are believable, and the narration is spot-on. It's not edge-of-your-seat stuff, but a good story - about families, history, stories that get passed down and misinterpreted, forgiveness, and compassion. One very small criticism is that Nic sounded much older than 45. If I hadn't known her age, I would've guessed at early 60's.

When 25-year-old Bella Michaels is brutally murdered in the small town of Strathdee, the community is stunned, and a media storm descends. Unwillingly thrust into the eye of that storm is Bella's beloved older sister, Chris, a barmaid at the local pub, whose apparent easygoing nature conceals hard-won wisdom and the kind of street smarts only experience can bring. As Chris is plunged into despair and searches for answers, reasons, explanation - anything - that could make even the smallest sense of Bella's death, her ex-husband, friends and neighbours do their best to support her.

Back at the iconic country pub where Quinn works, Andrea is sandbagging the place in preparation for heavy rains. Alone with her sleeping son in the back room, she reluctantly lets a biker in to wait out the storm. Out on the wet roads, tensions arise among four backpackers on their way to Darwin. They haven’t prepared for this kind of weather and the flooding isn’t the only threat on the horizon.
