Story
Award-winning investigative journalist Ross Coulthart has been intrigued by UFOs since mysterious glowing lights were reported near New Zealand's Kaikoura mountains when he was a teenager. The 1978 sighting is just one of thousands since the 1940s, and yet research into UFOs is still seen as the realm of crackpots and conspiracy theorists.

Truly fascinating and well balanced
Reviewed: 23-04-2023
Ross Coulthard transparently and deeply investigates what has to be the potentially most important topic in human history. if you read this book you can't be ambivalent to the likelihood of our planet having been visited by a non-human technology. I came into it a sceptic and came out an agnostic leaning towards believer. Either way it's a fascinating, engaging and thought provoking read.

Story
Hugh van Cuylenburg was a primary school teacher volunteering in northern India when he had a life-changing realisation: despite the underprivileged community the children were from, they were remarkably positive. By contrast, back in Australia Hugh knew that all too many children struggled with depression, social anxieties and mental illness. His own little sister had been ravaged by anorexia nervosa. How was it that young people he knew at home, who had food, shelter, friends and a loving family, struggled with their mental health, while these kids seemed so contented and resilient?

Amazing! And more important than EVER before!

Such an inspiring and uplifting story. It has some of the most emotional and funniest extremes I've read.
I'm not ashamed to say I cried multiple times during this book. Some of the tears were sad but more were inspirational; hearing the stories of people who were changed by a really simple message. The narration by the author Hugh Van Cuylenburg is wonderful. You can hear his restraint in the most emotional parts so as not to allow the real emotion between the words to distract from the message.
I also laughed so hard I had to pull my car over. The life his narration gives to the funny and inspirational stories is just so real.
Honestly, everyone needs these principles right now.

When an 11-year-old boy is found murdered, forensic evidence and reliable eyewitnesses undeniably point to the town's popular Little League coach. But the jailed suspect, arrested in a public spectacle, has an alibi, and further research convinces Detective Ralph Anderson that the coach was indeed out of town. So how can he have been in two places at the same time?

Story
Connell and Marianne grow up in the same small town in rural Ireland. The similarities end there; they are from very different worlds. When they both earn places at Trinity College in Dublin, a connection that has grown between them lasts long into the following years. This is an exquisite love story about how a person can change another person's life - a simple yet profound realisation that unfolds beautifully over the course of the novel. It tells us how difficult it is to talk about how we feel and it tells us - blazingly - about cycles of domination, legitimacy and privilege.

Vague spoilers below>
I loved portions of this book and the performance is nearly flawless.
The character of Marianne is superbly drawn and was a living character for me. Connell however just seemed 2-dimensional. I was frustrated by the complete lack of self-awareness in the main characters and I suppose people like that exist but it made them less relatible and realistic for me. The way they communicated with themselves and eachother reminded me of a Victorian period drama in its level of sophistication. It's been a while since I was their age so I'm going to have a younger friend read it and I'll reserve my final judgement till then.
Perhaps also I'm underestimating the modifying influence of mental illness on "normal people"...

Story
The routine traffic stop that ends in tragedy. The spy who spends years undetected at the highest levels of the Pentagon. The false conviction of Amanda Knox. Why do we so often get other people wrong? Why is it so hard to detect a lie, read a face or judge a stranger's motives? Through a series of encounters and misunderstandings - from history, psychology and infamous legal cases - Malcolm Gladwell takes us on an intellectual adventure into the darker side of human nature, where strangers are never simple and misreading them can have disastrous consequences.

The narration is excelent with just the right amount of theatre to deliver the message with power and penteration. The content (often challengingly confronting) is brought together in such a way as to really make you think about the message, almost like a well written and enjoyable essay.
It should be standard reading /listening for anyone who has power over another stranger and suggested reading for every adult who wants to have genuine interactions with strangers.

Some excellent performances of great works

The performances were generally good with Jason Isaacs being an absolute standout! Flawless!
Unfortunately the Invisible Man really doesn't suit being read by a woman. Okenedo did a fair job but it distracted me throughout the book.
On the whole, very enjoyable.

Story
Known as the ‘four horsemen’ of New Atheism, these four big thinkers of the 21st century met only once. Their electrifying examination of ideas on this remarkable occasion was intense and wide-ranging. Everything that was said as they agreed and disagreed with one another, interrogated ideas and exchanged insights - about religion and atheism, science and sense - speaks with urgency to our present age.

All three books were performed very well and Dracula in particular was an excellent performance.
The great thing about reading these in audiobook form is that the skill of the actors overcomes the difficulty of reading the archaic prose and provides a smooth, pleasurable and easily digestible experience.
