Story
Disasters are inherently hard to predict. But when catastrophe strikes, we ought to be better prepared than the Romans were when Vesuvius erupted or medieval Italians when the Black Death struck. We have science on our side, after all. Yet the responses of many developed countries to a new pathogen from China were badly bungled. Why? While populist rulers certainly performed poorly in the face of the pandemic, Niall Ferguson argues that more profound pathologies were at work - pathologies already visible in our responses to earlier disasters.

Disappointing
Reviewed: 05-11-2023
Started reading with excited anticipation but on hearing how he says he was right on COVID, as an early predictor of its severity, I tuned out. Not the book I want to read. Covid is recent history and more facts are being revealed. It is premature to write a fact based dissertation and draw conclusions. Very disappointed.

Story
The Gulag - a vast array of Soviet concentration camps that held millions of political and criminal prisoners - was a system of repression and punishment that terrorized the entire society, embodying the worst tendencies of Soviet communism. In this magisterial and acclaimed history, Anne Applebaum offers the first fully documented portrait of the Gulag, from its origins in the Russian Revolution, through its expansion under Stalin, to its collapse in the era of glasnost.

Captivating - a warning for Biden's America

History must be freely and impartially debated. Today the West political class is attempting to proscribe the truth. Lindsey Graham saying"..Russians dying, is the best money spent.? The concept of two Russian classes as exampled by the 2 entrapenurs conversation is equivalenced in the West it is not unique to Russia. Perhaps the anslysis is as simple as, if you allow you democracy to be chipped away, as in America now, people, in their own self interest will attatch themselver to the powerbase which will be encouraged to take more power and keep it.

Struggled to read it, returned book. Strong bias shown from beginning and could see the book was not going to weigh good and bad. Intent on painting a sensationally bad picture
