Timeless insights into human nature
Reviewed: 25-07-2024
Stephen King manages to clearly depict both the worst and the best of human nature in this novel. A poignant love story weaves around a damaged man’s life as he struggles to do what is right.
Putting aside that the technology is in a different decade and the historical characters are from a certain era, this story could easily be about politics today.
I have a sad point to make: If real world cult members were so easily dissuaded from worshipping their leaders as those following the charismatic politician in this novel, the world would be a much more peaceful place, but people aren’t that logical. Perhaps SK, like most of us, was more hopeful and less cynical when younger.
Despite that last point, and because of everything else I wrote and so much more, I highly recommend this book.

Story
It was just a random mutation - one of a billion that happen in viruses every day. But this one was different. It exploded out of Somalia and spread across the oceans before anybody thought to look up from their cell phones to see what was going on. The infected breathed the virus into the air around them, spreading it through the cities faster than anyone thought possible. Hospitals were overwhelmed. Police lines crumbled. Quarantine sites disintegrated. Cities started to collapse.

Wow! Adrenaline-filled apocalypse story
Reviewed: 28-05-2024
This is the fastest-paced apocalypse world I’ve immersed myself into, and it really feels like the reader is in the world that this author creates. I could barely “put the book down”, especially in the first two thirds when everything is crazy with action. The introspection of the main character shows that this author has real insight into humanity’s strengths, flaws, and potentials. If you’re squeamish about gore and swearing you’ve been warned. I didn’t mind it at all, but I’m an avid consumer of a wide variety of literature/genres/styles. I HIGHLY recommend this book series.

Story
In his first-ever Doctor Who novel, Tom Baker’s incredible imagination is given free rein. A story so epic it was originally intended for the big screen, Scratchman is a gripping, white-knuckle thriller almost 40 years in the making. The Doctor, Harry and Sarah Jane Smith arrive at a remote Scottish island when their holiday is cut short by the appearance of strange creatures - hideous scarecrows who are preying on the local population. The islanders are living in fear, and the Doctor vows to save them all.

Marvellously read adventure, nostalgic
Reviewed: 29-04-2024
Hearing the unmistakable voice of Tom Baker allowed me to picture him in this story. It is well described, allowing the audience to easily visualise the scenes. In places I found it a little slow, rather like some of the earlier Doctor Who mini-series style shows. Despite this, I enjoyed going on another wonderful adventure with The Doctor. The end note is truly delightful.

Story
Everything is familiar. But everything has changed. Coming back to the little community is like walking into a nightmare for Jim Gardener, poet, drunk, potential suicide. It all looks the same: the house; the furniture; Jim's friend, Bobbi; her beagle (though ageing); even the woods out at the back. But it was in the woods that Bobbi stumbled over the odd, part-buried object and felt a peculiar tingle as she brushed the soft earth away. Everything is familiar. But everything is about to change.

A lighter Stephen King classic
Reviewed: 25-04-2024
As always, Stephen King manages to imbue everyday mundanity with quiet horror, here triggered by an outside force but then amplified by our own insecurities and instincts. There is sweet redemption in the end, making this a bittersweet favourite.

To the thousands of tiny nomes who live under the floorboards of a large department store, there is no outside. Things like day and night, sun and rain are just daft old legends. Then a devastating piece of news shatters their existence: the Store, their whole world, is to be demolished.

A story for all ages
Reviewed: 10-04-2024
Accessible to both children and adults and read beautifully by Stephen Briggs, this story kept me captivated. The deeper and darker points about human nature that Terry Pratchett makes in his later Discworld novels are only lightly touched on here; enough to make the novice Pratchett listener start thinking and noticing these truths in the world around themselves. The story ends on a note that makes me want to know what happens next.

Neil Gaiman draws on old legends, histories, and cultural memories, then weaves them into a delightful and satisfying story that is relatable to anyone even passingly familiar with American culture. Highly recommended, and I can’t believe I left it this long to consume this book.

Please don’t skip over this book because you want to stay faithful to Discworld. I promise, you’ll be as gripped by these wonderful characters as you ever were by Vimes, Tiffany, Rincewind, or Death. This book is an example of Terry Pratchett at his finest. The references to Roundworld people and places make it that much more poignant and tangible.

Story
Death has been fired by the Auditors of Reality for the heinous crime of developing…a personality. Sent to live like everyone else, Death takes a new name and begins working as a farmhand. He's got the scythe already, after all. And for humanity, Death is just…gone. Which leads to the kind of chaos you always get when an important public service is withdrawn. If Death doesn't come for you, then what are you supposed to do in the meantime? You can't have the undead wandering about like lost souls—there's no telling what might happen.

We can see Sir Terry grappling with wider political issues as well as his usual addressing of personal values in Jingo.

Stephen Briggs is masterful at eliciting different characters with his voice, and bringing this story to life.
The story itself, while focusing on Vimes really gives Angua's character development, and lays delightful little clues for future novels.
