Story
The inspiration for the BBC series of the same name. Fresh out of Glasgow Veterinary College, to the young James Herriot 1930s Yorkshire seems to offer an idyllic pocket of rural life in a rapidly changing world. But from his erratic new colleagues, brothers Siegfried and Tristan Farnon, to incomprehensible farmers, herds of semiferal cattle, a pig called Nugent and an overweight Pekingese called Tricki Woo, James find he is on a learning curve as steep as the hills around him.

Brilliantly written, brilliantly narrated, this is exactly what Herriot is known for. A beautiful wide-eyed appreciation of the world, leavened with a wry humour. And absolutely brilliant narration.

Story
Your body is teeming with tens of trillions of microbes. It's an entire world, a colony full of life. In other words, you contain multitudes. These microscopic companions sculpt our organs, protect us from diseases, guide our behaviour and bombard us with their genes. They also hold the key to understanding all life on earth. In I Contain Multitudes, Ed Yong opens our eyes and invites us to marvel at ourselves and other animals in a new light, less as individuals and more as thriving ecosystems.

Well narrated too, despite a few minor recording inconsistencies.

The Ancestor's Tale is a pilgrimage back through time - a journey on which we meet up with fellow pilgrims as we and they converge on our common ancestors. Chimpanzees join us at about six million years in the past, gorillas at seven million years, orangutans at 14 million years, as we stride on together, a growing band. The journey provides the setting for a collection of some 40 tales.

Dawkins' finest!

In my opinion, this is Dawkins' finest book... and that's saying a lot!
It's as jam packed with fascinating facts, as carefully thought out, and as immaculately articulated as any of his other books... but for sheer delightful readability, and cunning conceived story, and creative linkages, this book surely beats them all.

Entertaining writing, and competently performed, but this book's real value is the plethora of fascinating information it divulges with such delight and panache. Facts ranging from the familiar to the astounding are nestled, cheek by jowl, in this gem of a book. I expected to enjoy it. but was still pleasantly surprised.

Story
The enchanted island of Corfu was home to Gerald Durrell and his family for five years before the Second World War. For the passionate young zoologist, Corfu was a natural paradise, teeming with strange birds and beasts that he could collect watch and care for. But life was not without its problems - Gerald’s family often objected to his animal-collecting activities, especially when the beasts wound up in the family’s villa or even worse - the fridge.

A great performance of one of the most delightful, colourful, and entertaining books ever written. The style is hilarious, caricatured and deeply beautiful. Worthy of repeated listenings, grinning, chortling and guffawing every few minutes, interspersed with misty-eyed periods of tranquility and appreciation. I cannot recommend this book highly enough.

Poor performance of an exceptional book

Great book. Mediocre performance.
Reviewed: 06-01-2021
One of the greatest books ever written. Clearly read, but very inconsistent. Sometimes character's speech is rendered in the voice of a character voice, sometimes in the voice of the narrator. I found this disconcerting. Some other pronunciation issues too, but in this it is possible the error is mine (though I doubt it)

A Short History of Nearly Everything is Bill Bryson's quest to understand everything that has happened from the Big Bang to the rise of civilization. He takes subjects that normally bore the pants off most of us, like geology, chemistry, and particle physics, and aims to render them comprehensible to people who have never thought they could be interested in science. In the company of some extraordinary scientists, Bill Bryson reveals the world in a way most of us have never seen it before.
