I really enjoyed learning about the first two years of Trajan’s reign. I look forward to further audiobooks in the same series with perhaps a new narrator with a more engaging flair.

I am not sure how this book was published or indeed was written. A Boys Own series of unbelievable and inaccurate stories cobbled together. I couldn’t finish it because I was embarrassed this publication. It would have to be the worst audible production.

Sweden, 1942—Two old friends meet. They are cousins. One is Prince George, Duke of Kent, brother of the King of England. The other is Prince Philipp von Hessen, a committed Nazi and close friend of Adolf Hitler. Days later, the Prince George is killed in a plane crash in the north of Scotland. The official story is that it was an accident—but not everyone is convinced. There is even a suggestion that the Duke's plane was sabotaged, but with no evidence, Cambridge spy Tom Wilde is sent north to discover the truth . . .

Story
From the chart-topping podcast The Rest is History, a whistle-stop tour through the past – from Alexander the Great to Agatha Christie, the Wars of the Roses to Watergate. The nation’s favourite historians Tom Holland and Dominic Sandbrook take on the most curious moments in history, answering the questions we didn’t even think to ask. Whether it is sending historical figures to Casa Amor in a series of Love Island, ranking history’s most famous eunuchs and pigeons, or debating the meaning of greatness, there is nothing too big or too small for Tom and Dominic to unpick.

I follow the rest is history on the podcast and attended the presentation in Sydney last year. This was really rather disappointing with very few bits of interesting history but filled with a lot of bad jokes possibly oriented to an English audience. Not really funny.

Story
On April 30, 1980, six heavily armed gunmen burst into the Iranian embassy on Princes Gate, overlooking Hyde Park in London. There they took 26 hostages, including embassy staff, visitors, and three British citizens. A tense six-day siege ensued as millions gathered around screens across the country to witness the longest news flash in British television history, in which police negotiators and psychiatrists sought a bloodless end to the standoff, while the SAS – hitherto an organisation shrouded in secrecy – laid plans for a daring rescue mission: Operation Nimrod.

Considering that it was nearly 40 years ago it was amazing that the SAS did what they did. Incredible narration. To be in the SAS one has to be a little crazy!

The Ashes are on the line as England and Australia meet at Old Trafford in July 1961 for the fourth Test. For most of the match, England have their noses ahead – until a dramatic final day, of intensely fluctuating fortunes, as the tourists eventually storm to victory. In short, an Ashes classic, told here by David Kynaston and Harry Ricketts in vivid and immersive detail, recreating the sometimes agonising experience of millions of armchair viewers and listeners.

Focusing mainly on one test match was interesting. I can remember as a very small boy in England wishing England to win and of course being disappointed. As an adult living in Sydney by very far from where Richie Benaud lived I have a different take. I remember more Richie as a test commentator much loved and missed. Obviously written from an English point of view it’s sad to hear of the decline of cricket in England. Hopefully it will be temporary but in this age of instance everything test cricket may have seen its best days. As far as I am concerned there is nothing better than a good test match.

Story
When the Second World War broke out in September 1939, the British asked Australia for help. With some misgivings, the Australian government sent five destroyers to beef up the British Royal Navy in the Mediterranean. HMAS Vendetta, Vampire, Voyager, Stuart and Waterhen were old ships, small with worn-out engines. Their crews used to joke they were held together by string and chewing gum; when the Nazi propaganda minister Josef Goebbels heard of them, he sneered that they were a load of scrap iron.

Extremely well read and researched. I was given the book by my son but opted to listen to it, probably more of convenience than anything else. One small matter is the confusion about the metrics. Whilst a lot understand metres, kilometres and heights etc the use of knots, nautical miles and heights measured in miles is still in use especially in aviation and shipping.

Story
The Roman army was the greatest fighting machine the ancient world produced. The Roman Empire depended on soldiers not just to win its wars, defend its frontiers and control the seas but also to act as the engine of the state. Roman legionaries and auxiliaries came from across the Roman world and beyond. They served as tax collectors, policemen, surveyors, as civil engineers and, if they survived, in retirement, as civic worthies, craftsmen and politicians. Some even rose to become emperors.

Reviewed: 15-07-2024
A great pity that only a minimal amount has been devoted to the civil, engineering sides of the Roman army. The network of roads, the aqueducts, the sewage systems etc are perhaps the biggest legacy of the Roman army. And, too much a focus on Britain. However, I suppose that is the speciality of the author.
