Story
Father Greg Lockwood is unlike any Catholic priest you have ever met - a man who lounges in boxer shorts, who loves action movies, and whose constant jamming on the guitar reverberates "like a whole band dying in a plane crash in 1972". His daughter is an irreverent poet who long ago left the church's country. When an unexpected crisis leads her and her husband to move back into her parents' rectory, their two worlds collide.

This was such an immersive read. If only all memoirs could be like this- I was very much in it, rather than feeling like I was looking in the rear view mirror. Lockwood had me cringing, crying and kacking my pants. She’s a great writer, a sharp descriptive story teller, bringing to life her family with much love, understanding, and endearment.

Story
Recently retired policeman Tom Kettle is settling into the quiet of his new home, a lean-to annexed to a Victorian castle overlooking the Irish Sea. For months he has barely seen a soul, catching only glimpses of his eccentric landlord and a nervous young mother who has moved in next door. Occasionally, fond memories return, of his family, his beloved wife June and their two children.

I was transfixed throughout the superb reading of this deeply moving story. It had me in tears. I don’t know if many writers who can convey character so fully and do well resolved as Barry. He captures the era, the norms, the culture of a place and the human dilemma of people so brilliantly. I’m in his thrall.

While the world is still counting the cost of the Second World War and the Iron Curtain has descended, young Roland Baines's life is turned upside down. Stranded at boarding school, his vulnerability attracts his piano teacher, Miriam Cornell, leaving scars as well as a memory of love that will never fade. Twenty-five years later, as the radiation from the Chernobyl disaster spreads across Europe, Roland's wife mysteriously vanishes and he is forced to confront the reality of his rootless existence and look for answers in his family history.

I had to replay the end several times, just to take in all its poignancy. Was it all worth it Alyssa? - the reader would probably ask her. Did Roland really not amount to anything special? Stephanie would have vehemently defended her Opa. A really mesmerising story of a life.

Story
Oliver Burkeman turns decades of self-help advice on its head and paradoxically forces us to rethink our attitudes towards failure, uncertainty and death. It’s our constant efforts to avoid negative thinking that cause us to feel anxious, insecure and unhappy. What if happiness can be found embracing the things we spend our lives trying to escape? Wise, practical and funny, The Antidote is a thought-provoking, counterintuitive and ultimately uplifting listen, celebrating the power of negative thinking.

The pursuit of happiness is such an interesting topic but unfortunately not when it’s written in a style where the author has not real expertise in the subject but relies completely on the work of others to contradict the worthwhile attributes of ‘positive thinking’. His arguments range far and wide as he dips into every concept, and era in which beings have sought solutions to the human dilemma. And all that dipping, name dropping, quoting become incredibly annoying. Mr Burkeman’s book is rather slight instead of offering anything truly meaningful.

Story
When celebrated writer Joan Didion’s life was altered forever, she wrote a new chapter. In this adaptation of her iconic memoir, Didion transforms the story of the shattering loss of her husband and their daughter into a one-woman play performed by Tony Award winner Vanessa Redgrave, who originated the role on Broadway in 2007.

Vanessa Redgrave’s reading really is a performance; this book is very close to being a monologue. Redgrave captures Joan Didion’s voice so perfectly; American, wavering, perplexed. She brings so much more to this audible telling than a hard copy would. For Didion to have somehow got through this tremendous loss was no mean feat, and while it may not offer up any quick remedies or pop psychology for grief, it is a stunning emotional outpouring. Having recently lost a family member- I found this book to be incredibly moving.

I really don’t know what to say about this incredible piece of work. To say that it has stayed with me for a very long time, or that I’ve learnt so much, I had no idea, or I’m devastated by the stories - these words don’t come close to describing my experience. Thank you Matthew Desmond for your work. I feel humbled. The epilogue was really incredible too. I’m so glad you added your personal chapter; it made complete sense.
