A fascinating insight into lots of incredible moments in history.
By its nature, each lecture is only an overview of a period in time, but such an entertaining one.
As promised, Robert Garland gives us a ringside seat into a living history.

Story
When slave owner Simon Fourchet asks Benjamin January to investigate sabotage, arson, and murder on his plantation, January is reluctant to do any favors for the savage man who owned him until he was seven. But he knows too well that plantation justice means that if the true culprit is not found, every slave on Mon Triomphe will suffer. Abandoning his Parisian French for the African patois of a field hand, cutting cane until his bones ache and his musician’s hands bleed, Benjamin must use all his intelligence and cunning to find the killer - or find himself sold down the river.

An absolutely magnificent novel! It was harrowing, full of suspense and mystery, but wasn’t as bleak as it sounds, as Ben found kindness and goodness on the plantation as well as great suffering.
The mystery was well drawn, and I didn’t see it coming, but probably should have.
Ben’s attempts to come to terms with his past as a slave was particularly well done and the conversation with Mohammad about his father made me cry.
A wonderful book.

The King’s Gambit

Story
In this Edgar Award-nominated mystery, John Maddox Roberts takes listeners back to a Rome filled with violence and evil. Vicious gangs ruled the streets of Crassus and Pompey, routinely preying on plebeian and patrician alike. So the garroting of a lowly ex-slave and the disembowelment of a foreign merchant in the dangerous Subura district seemed of little consequence to the Roman hierarchy.

Good fun and lots of great historical detail

I enjoyed this novel - but agree with others who say this is not the best of the series. Some of the attitudes didn't seem consistent with Roman attitudes (e.g. Decius being willing to risk his life to investigate the murder of foreigners). But, that aside, the book was a lot of fun and was full of interesting and accurate information about life in Ancient Rome - and I am keen to read more.
Unfortunately, I was not enamoured of John Lee's narration. It seemed rather stilted and affected.

Story
England, May 1536. Anne Boleyn is dead, decapitated in the space of a heartbeat by a hired French executioner. As her remains are bundled into oblivion, Thomas Cromwell breakfasts with the victors. The blacksmith's son from Putney emerges from the spring's bloodbath to continue his climb to power and wealth, while his formidable master, Henry VIII, settles to short-lived happiness with his third queen. Cromwell is a man with only his wits to rely on; he has no great family to back him, no private army.

I approached this book with caution - after reading the scathing reviews of Ben Miles performance - but I loved it!
Ben does a wonderful job, and the novel itself is an utter delight.
It took me a few chapters to distinguish between voices for the different characters, but suddenly it clicked - and I was away. I enjoyed this enormously.

It revived my childhood passion for dinosaurs in a big way and taught me lots of things I didn't know. There have been so many advances in the field of palaeontology since I was 14!
