Repetitive and unremarkable

The theme is great and much needed but despite the length of this book, it never says anything particularly new or insightful. Everything it does say, it says repeatedly. The whole thing could have been a long article in a magazine.

It’s a belief that unites the left and right, psychologists and philosophers, writers and historians. It drives the headlines that surround us and the laws that touch our lives. From Machiavelli to Hobbes, Freud to Dawkins, the roots of this belief have sunk deep into Western thought. Human beings, we’re taught, are by nature selfish and governed by self-interest.

At Uluru, an invitation was issued to the Australian people. With the upcoming referendum, the nation will decide whether to accept that invitation. In this compelling, fresh and imaginative essay, Megan Davis draws out the significance and the promise of this “constitutional moment” – what it could mean for recognition and justice. Davis presents the Voice to Parliament as an Australian solution to an Australian problem. For Indigenous people, it is a practical response to “the torment of powerlessness”.

Welcome to the world of the Secret Barrister. These are the stories of life inside the courtroom. They are sometimes funny, often moving and ultimately life-changing. How can you defend a child abuser you suspect to be guilty? What do you say to someone sentenced to ten years whom you believe to be innocent? What is the law, and why do we need it? And why do they wear those stupid wigs?

Topics include voir dire, opening statement, preparing witnesses, cross examination, using exhibits, closing argument, jury research, and more, with excellent examples and “do’s and don’ts” provided throughout. Think of this audiobook as the senior law partner’s memo to associates on how to really try a case.

Grating narration
Reviewed: 30-03-2023
I found the narration on this one almost unlistenable. The voice was so grating I had to stop about halfway. The content was mixed in value. It started well, but then went downhill after a few chapters. Some of the content painfully labours a basic point with endless examples while other parts don't give any examples at all. All up, I think it's one for a quick scan on the bookshop shelf, definitely not for audio book format.

This is a great sequel for and as good as Can't Hurt Me. It shows a real progression from burning fury to push and excel and be the hardest mf alive to more of a indomitable, relentlessness of passion and drive. Inspirational in the best way - not hollow platitudes, but gritty, bleeding reality of what a human can endure.

Story
Have you, a friend or family member been living with undiagnosed autism? For every visibly autistic person you meet, there are countless 'masked' people who pass as neurotypical. They don't fit the stereotypical mould of autism and are often forced by necessity to mask who they are, spending their entire lives trying to hide their autistic traits. In particular, there is evidence that autism remains significantly undiagnosed in women, people of colour, trans and gender non-conforming people, many of whom are only now starting to recognise those traits later in life.

Story
In this gripping essay, Hugh White explores Australia’s fateful choice to back America to the hilt and oppose China. What led both sides of politics to align with America so absolutely? Is this a case of sleepwalking to war? What tests might a new government face? White assesses America’s credibility and commitment, by examining AUKUS, the Quad, Trump and Biden. He discusses what the Ukraine conflict tells us about the future. And he argues that the US can neither contain China nor win a war over Taiwan. So where does this leave our future security and prosperity in Asia?

Generally good but not new
Reviewed: 24-10-2022
This is generally good content and well put together. There is a section on personal safety that is either way over the top or very obvious depending on where in the world you are living. The rest is good and well narrated but I've read almost all of it in several other books. If you not read anything on toughening up this is worth a go if Can't Hurt Me by Goggins is too hardcore/macho for you.
