Story
Lifelong friends, they went their separate ways. Now they are together again, though each holds secrets from the others in his heart. They speak of a world shadowed with rumors of war. They speak of tales of strange monsters, creatures of myth, creatures of legend. They do not speak of their secrets. Not then. Not until a chance encounter with a beautiful, sorrowful woman, who bears a magical crystal staff, draws the companions deeper into the shadows, forever changing their lives and shaping the fate of the world.

Maybe not for me
Reviewed: 08-11-2022
To the book: My other half has read this book so many times, he can quote it by heart. I haven't read a fantasy based on D&D before and I struggled to become invested in the giant cast of characters.
The book is well written and if dwarves and elves are your thing, you'll probably thoroughly enjoy this. It wasn't really my cup of tea, if I read fantasy novels, I prefer to have one toe still in semi-reality as I know it.
To the Narration: Not great. Constant emphasis on phrases and words out of the context of the writing made it a hard listen. The characterisations of the players by the narrator were good, but the weird pace of the reading means I won't be in a hurry to purchase another book read by this narrator.

Story
It was no surprise that Angela Williams went to jail. A traumatic, violent upbringing saw to that. But after serving a short sentence for theft as a teenager, she worked hard to break the cycle. Thirteen years later Angela was studying, teaching, providing a stable home for her son, and finally feeling like she'd got her life together. Then she got hit by a postie bike. Police realised that Angela still had 10 months to go on the prison sentence she'd thought was in her distant past. However, Angela was a different prisoner the second time around.

Gritty and evocative
Reviewed: 12-09-2020
After being a true crime podcast fan for years now, this was my first ever audiobook and I loved it.
Angela's story is gritty and raw and her writing really sucks you in to make you feel the things that she felt in this time of her life which can be a pretty uncomfortable feeling at times.
Julie Bilington did a great job with bringing the book to life.

This audio novella is a stand-alone prequel to the Cormac Reilly series. Twenty-two-year-old Niamh Turley thought she had problems dealing with the obnoxious principal of the school she’s teaching in as well as the anxious parents of her little charges, but when she wakes one morning to a missing roommate and a garda knocking on her door, her life spirals out of control fast....

Good narration but a predictable story

Written well enough and the narrator was very good, easy to listen to but the story wasn't terribly original.
