By the time she was 14, Chrissie Hynde knew she had to get out of Akron, Ohio. Her perfect '50s American childhood upturned by a newly acquired taste for rock 'n' roll, motorbikes and the ‘get down boys' seen at gigs in and around Cleveland - Mitch Ryder, the Jeff Beck Group, the Velvet Underground and David Bowie among the many.

I usually gravitate to audiobooks narrated by the writer. You’ll never get closer to the source.
I listened to a sample and thought this narrator knew what she was reading and inhabited it well.
It’s a great story. A great slice of life. It really only covers the sad and sordid side and pays scant attention to one of the greatest voices in Rock.

Story
We're all searching for answers to the biggest questions: How can we be good? Find calm? Properly grieve? Beat FOMO? Work out what truly matters? Well, the good news is that the wisest minds in history asked the exact same questions—and they found answers. The ancient philosophy of Stoicism shows us that we are already in possession of the very tools we need to excavate this much-needed wisdom for ourselves. So into the past we go with Brigid Delaney, to a time not unlike our own: one full of pandemonium, war, plagues, pestilence, treachery, corruption, anxiety, and overindulgence.

I’ve had an interest in Stoicism for some time, and an aspiration to adhere to the philosophy with varying degrees of success!
This book has really helped me to break it down and simplify it to the basics. The Control test is something I utilise several times a day.
I bought the audible version then also bought the paperback as I wanted a ready reference that didn’t involve my phone. Brigid presents the concepts in such an easily digestible manner that is totally applicable to our contemporary life.
I’m so glad this book has crossed my path.

Sinéad O'Connor's voice and trademark shaved head made her famous by the age of 21. Her recording of Prince's 'Nothing Compares 2 U' made her a global icon. She outraged millions when she tore up a photograph of Pope John Paul II on American television. O'Connor was unapologetic and impossible to ignore, calling out hypocrisy wherever she saw it. She remained that way for over three decades.

I loved this So much. Painfully honest, incredibly revealing and also very funny in places. Sinead is nakedly open about her journey and has a wisdom and unapologetic perspective on her life so far. I was always a fan, but now I'm a devotee.

The title for me is a bit misleading but the chapters never disappointed . Well researched and beautifully read by the author, it’s an audible equivalent to a page turner. I’ve listened to the Anthony Bourdain chapter several times and it’s as revealing of the subject as it is of the writer.

Story
Where can a tin of tuna buy you clean clothes? Which British education system struggles with 50 percent illiteracy? Where do teetotal Muslims attend AA meetings? Where is it easier to get 'spice' than paracetamol? Welcome to Her Majesty's Prison Service, a creaking and surreal world that has been left to rot for decades in the shadows of polite society. Like most people, documentary-maker Chris Atkins didn't spend much time thinking about prisons. But after becoming embroiled in a dodgy scheme to fund his latest film, he was sent down for five years.

I heard about the book via Adam Buxton podcast, and glad I did. Though I live on the other side of the world I have no doubt by that things are any better here. Mental illness and drug addiction are not crimes.
The book is well researched and beautifully read. Totally engrossing and at times really amusing.
A sad testament to our value system.

Story
Born into music royalty, the daughter of folk legends Kate McGarrigle and Loudon Wainwright III and sister to the highly acclaimed singer Rufus Wainwright, Martha grew up in a world filled with such incomparable folk legends as Leonard Cohen, Anna McGarrigle, Richard and Linda Thompson, Pete Townsend and Emmylou Harris. It was within this loud, boisterous musical milieu that Martha came of age, struggling to find her voice until she exploded onto the music scene.

A really personal journey by a powerful woman with a lot to say. I’ve always liked her voice and her energy and knew a bit about her lineage
I was listening to her parents before she was born.
Seen her perform and felt her intensity and passion but the book filled in so much.
Martha reads really well. There’s no holding back and she has a clear understanding of her journey so far.
At times she reminded me of a young Marianne Faithful but I think she’s found her strength sooner.
Poor Brad gets a bashing. I imagine his book if he ever wrote one would paint a very different story,
But I doubt I’d be interested in reading it.
I think Audio bios, when read by the writer, are the closest us strangers get to knowing someone we admire.
More power to your pen Martha. You rock.

I think I embarked looking for titillation but quickly realised it was more about my own loneliness and search for connection.
Wear headphones as recommended. The series is beautifully produced. The soundscape is rich and varied. Laura speaks with remarkable clarity, bravery and raw honesty.
Thanks to all involved. It really moved me.

Story
Over the last decade, we have become better at knowing what brings us contentment, well-being and joy. We know, for example, that there are a few core truths to science of happiness. We know that being kind and altruistic makes us happy, that turning off devices, talking to people, forging relationships, living with meaning and delving into the concerns of others offer our best chance at achieving happiness. But how do we retain happiness? It often slips out of our hands as quickly as we find it. So, when we are exposed to, or learn, good things, how do we continue to burn with them?
