Compelling story

I liked that you are given some time to absorb all the facts surrounding the case, so you can consider all possible suspects without knowing what Strike is thinking. I also liked the character/relationship building that went on between Strike & Robyn. I was hooked after the first couple of chapters and I am keen to read the sequels. Narration was also good with the ability to distinguish between all the characters.

Story
Sir John Penlyon is planning to spend Christmas at his estate with his niece and his friend Danby, the closest thing he has to family since disowning his daughter years ago. (She eloped with the parson, who was, of course, penniless.) Danby suggests that at Christmastime the estate needs the presence of small children, and offers to find some - the “hirelings” - despite Sir John’s skepticism. Three children duly arrive, and the youngest, precocious four year-old Moppet, quickly endears herself to Sir John.

Such a delight to immerse yourself in this enchanting & creative little gem over the holiday season. Mary Elizabeth Braddon must be an underrated writer as she does not appear in any list of literary 'greats' that i have ever seen. In my opinion, she should be! Loved this tale of true emotion, carried along with such articulate flair! I dearly hope she has more work that I can explore!

OTT charicature recitation

Returned this book as it was just taking too long to get going...repititious & boring. Didn't like the over the top charicature voices of the narrator. The story sounded interesting to me but it was a drag.
