Story
Gage Chandler is descended from kings. That’s what his mother always told him. Years later, he is a true crime writer, with one grisly success – and a movie adaptation – to his name, along with a series of subsequent less notable efforts. But now he is being offered the chance for the big break – to move into the house where a pair of briefly notorious murders occurred, apparently the work of disaffected teens during the Satanic Panic of the 1980s.

Not often do I finish a book that annoys me so much. But I did. Reading all the 5 star reviews made me think something amazing was going to happen.
Voice acting: Horrendous. The oddest cadence throughout that was read almost like a stanza, pausing constantly in random parts of a sentence. It was akin to a pop singer attempting to sing an opera.
Story: Some redeeming features. Certain parts were interesting. The middle section inserted the most spectacular POS for no pay off. The story did not flow well. The last chapter would make any English teacher cry.
Unless you are a fan boy of the Author, move on.

I haven't read these books for years. After recently listening to the trilogy, I was happy with it, but it had some age to it. This book was brilliant. Stands up well and it's just really good.

Story
In suburban Georgetown, a killer's Reeboks whisper on the floor of a posh home. In a seedy D.C. porno house, a patron is swiftly garroted to death. The next day America learns that two of its Supreme Court justices have been assassinated. And in New Orleans, a young law student prepares a legal brief. To Darby Shaw it was no more than a legal shot in the dark, a brilliant guess. To the Washington establishment it's political dynamite.

Sexist novel that does not stand the test of time.
Reviewed: 10-06-2024
I have been trying to listen to some big novels from back in the day.
The first point is narration. Although not the worst I have ever heard, it was obviously recorded a while ago. An odd, pan-American accent represents a generic nothingness. It lends no characters spark.
Secondly. The story is the most sexist novel I have read in a while. I kept going, I had somewhat assumed that it was intentionally so, to represent the climate at the time. I tried to look into this, with no luck. So appears to be just abhorrent.
Everyone sexualises Darby. Men get upset with her when she doesn't immediately accept the many advances thrown her way. Even though she is on the run, fearing for her life, there is nothing that gets in the way of her constantly upsetting men by not sleeping with each and every one on her journey. Men talk down to her constantly.
Darby is herself written semi okay, but she does refer to other women as "females" and only gets to talk to two other women, briefly, and berates their physical appearance or criticises them based on assumptions of thinking they will behave a certain way. There is also an weird somersault of behaviour when she meets Gray. For no apparent reason given, she reverses all her past behaviour and trusts him without reserve. He in return is nothing special, is somewhat sleazy and at one point yells at her when she isn't doing what he wants. Joy.
If I could give it 0.5 stars I would. I audibly scoffed, made vomit sounds, and swore while listening to this.

An interesting read, it probably does come off better as a podcast though. Starts of chapters rehashed known info, sometimes several times.
Otherwise, it was well researched and gripping. Headley's voice is at times monotonous, and I felt the pace would of worked better a tiny smidge faster.
Great story and I'm glad it was told!

Story
These are the stories that defy conventional logic. The proverbial vanished without a trace incidences, which happen a lot more (and a lot closer to your backyard) than almost anyone thinks. These are the missing whose situations are the hardest on loved ones left behind. The cases that are an embarrassment for park superintendents, rangers, and law enforcement charged with Search & Rescue.

Good, but not for everyone
Reviewed: 04-09-2023
I decided to give this a go after hearing a reviewer call it "One of the scariest books (they) had read".
Based on deciphering the why, where and heart ache of when people go missing into the wilderness. It follows one specific case and a father on a search. I learnt that most searches in the USA (at least) will close at 5 days, and after that it is often left to family and friends to continue if they have the time and/or resources.
Lots of interwoven examples, stats and theories. From hyperthermia to big foot to Jerusalem syndrome, everything is examined. Do these people want to be found or have they met a foul end? Bleak notes of mental illness and the significantly higher rate of indigenous disappearances. Bigger questions are asked such as: if this is the amount of missing in the wilderness, what about the rest of the populous in general; or, why are most people found in areas close to where they went missing that have been scoured numerous times?
Interesting listen, but I don't think it's for a lot of people. I'm not sure if it took so long to complete as potentially I didn't want to know what other theory or outcome was around the corner. Maybe it's listening to a story about a people we don't know except from the memories of others.
Rating: 3.5-4/10 - I'm still not sure how to rate it.

Story
When glamorous socialite Noemí Taboada receives a frantic letter from her newlywed cousin begging to be rescued from a mysterious doom, it's clear something is desperately amiss. Catalina has always had a flair for the dramatic, but her claims that her husband is poisoning her and her visions of restless ghosts seem remarkable, even for her. Noemí's chic gowns and perfect lipstick are more suited to cocktail parties than amateur sleuthing, but she immediately heads to High Place, a remote mansion in the Mexican countryside, determined to discover what is so affecting her cousin.

My rating: 5.5/10
Review: The low rating might not be to do with the quality of the book, it was everything that was promised... a Gothic novel and Mexican. I think it was the pace that was the let down for me, I am just not a fan of such slow paced books. It makes Dracula seem fast, and for a novel of this length that isn't good. It did provide some unexpected unique horror, which is what kept me listening. If you like a slow burn and some romance thrown in, you might like it more than me. CW: Cannibalism, sexual assault, incest.

Charlie Reade looks like a regular high school kid, great at baseball and football, a decent student. But he carries a heavy load. His mom was killed in a hit-and-run accident when he was 10, and grief drove his dad to drink. Charlie learned how to take care of himself—and his dad. Then, when Charlie is 17, he meets a dog named Radar and his aging master, Howard Bowditch, a recluse in a big house at the top of a big hill, with a locked shed in the backyard. Sometimes strange sounds emerge from it.
