Story
The dense Michigan forest. Haunting wails. The clip-clop of demon hooves on a bridge to nowhere. It’s more than a tall tale to Brenda Jennings, whose sister disappeared in those woods one fateful night. Three years later, on a solo stakeout in the dark, Brenda goes in after her. She’s desperate for answers, and terrified to find what lies waiting on the other side of that bridge.

A good quick read between heavier books— a palette cleanser.

This novella had all the makings of an epic horror read along the lines of a creepy pasta, however about 3/4 through it kinda tanked. I get that short stories can’t always deliver in the same way that a fully fleshed book can but the ending and what is the first and final confrontation with the “Opso” was a bit of a let down. There was barely a page, two at most, in which any detail is given about this encounter. Overall written well, just dropped the ball on the home stretch. Still a good quick read between heavier books— a palette cleanser so to speak.

Story
Bound in an unwanted marriage, Freya spends her days gutting fish, but dreams of becoming a warrior. And of putting an axe in her boorish husband's back. Freya's dreams abruptly become reality when her husband betrays her to the region's jarl, landing her in a fight to the death against his son. To survive, Freya is forced to reveal her deepest secret: she possesses a drop of a goddess's blood, which gives her magic capable of repelling any attack. A magic that was foretold would unite the fractured nation of Skaland beneath a king-the one who controls the shield maiden's fate.

“Not all scars we earn are skin-deep, Freya Born-in-Fire. There is no less honor in them.”
This first instalment in the Saga of the Unfated Series was an absolute pleasure to read. I’m a devotee to all things old Norse - the mythology, sagas, music, culture and seiðr path… and this book definitely gave me some chills.
You don’t need to be a Norse enthusiast to adore this book, but seeing as I am, I could not stop listening! Consumed in two days and it only took me so long because I had house guests!
I enthusiastically await my hardback copy’s arrival to add to my book-babies.
I listened to the audiobook, which is hands down a must - Nina Yndis’ narration brings a level of authenticity and depth to the storytelling that ultimately sets the perfect mood, drawing the listener into Danielle Jensen’s woven world of Norse ritual traditions, shield-maidens, the god-touched/unfated and the weaving of Wyrd.
There’s:
- Forbidden love
- A delightful slow burn 🔥
- Mutual pinning 🔥🔥
- Angsty sexual tension 🔥🔥🔥
- And totally necessary 🔥🔥🔥🔥
…nothing to excess however, in my opinion at least!
Taught to fight by her warrior father, a shield-maiden’s path is all Freya dreams of. She keeps a secret however, of which her parents fear discovery, one she is forbidden to declare.
Familial expectations and her true self hidden, a life is created outside her control and far from the battle glories she yearns for.
Dutiful as ever, Freya masks resentment and discontent until a deep betrayal becomes the catalyst that grants her hearts desire… but at what cost?
The greed of man and pull of the God’s has the power to tear apart and reshape everything she’s ever known to be true. How many will become casualties to a fate the God’s and Wyrd don’t even have complete say over?
Freya is one of my fav FMC’s currently, even when her moral compass makes me wanna shake her some!
And Bjorn… 🥵🫠
He is best experienced in all his delectable Viking glory… read A Fate Inked In Blood ASAP!!!
But seriously, if you don’t come back and tell me you’re crushing on Bjorn-bear something fierce, then I banish you from my sight 🤣👉🏻
Not going to throw any big spoilers out, if you know you know and if you don’t, I reiterate, you should get reading post-haste!
What a ride… can’t wait for the next instalment ✄17

I’ve screwed up big time. Now, I’m facing the damning consequences. The walls are closing in as I balance duty to grandmother’s memory with my impossible feelings for Kyros. Then, there’s the freakin 17 human-vampire hybrid thing to deal with. The problem is, I’m no longer willing to lose the person I’ve gambled against from the start.

Never did Sabina Burrell imagine that foiling a plot against her sister would lead to her having to wed the arrogant Sir Jeffree de Crecy. She has never met such a loathsome man, and that included her late husband.
