Title almost tells all.
Reviewed: 11-11-2021
Is this John Birmingham the Australian author? If so he has totally immersed himself in a USA setting and created a totally convincing small town setting peopled with some initially likeable characters who surround and support the mentally challenged but magnificently fit Cooper Fox. During a celebration in which the whole town participates, there’s an incident. Outsiders attack Fox, and a blow to the head changes everything about him. How that unfolds and it’s consequences are both mildly predictable, see title, and utterly gripping.
The reader, Dan Bittner brilliantly presents each character, shading his voice just so…with one exception. It won’t spoil the plot to say that there’s a cockney character, and this accent totally eludes him. Not that that harms the tightly wound plot. Very highly recommended but don’t listen in bed or you’ll never get to sleep yourself.

Not your typical Audible read
Reviewed: 09-10-2021
I expected a book reading: you know, Audible, usually one or two narrators. But this is like the radio plays my parents listened to, complete with sound effects and characters growing distant or approaching. As such it’s a pretty predictable thriller but I’m only on chapter 1 and so far the system is refusing to play chapter 2, just restarting over and over. Something wrong here.

Two worthy sparring partners

First, great fun the way the two are intent on scoring points off each other.
Second, I’d have liked a bit more history but what there is, is vividly portrayed.
Third, now I’ll have to binge “Outlander” again.

Story
In the 1920s the richest people per capita in the world were members of the Osage Indian nation in Oklahoma. After oil was discovered beneath their land, they rode in chauffeured automobiles, built mansions, and sent their children to study in Europe. Then, one by one, the Osage began to be killed off. The family of an Osage woman, Mollie Burkhart, became a prime target. Her relatives were shot and poisoned. And this was just the beginning, as more and more members of the tribe began to die under mysterious circumstances.

A shattering crime

Cold blooded, calculated and local law abetted. One of the worst cases of attempted genocide prior to the holocaust except this was in America. Every American should be aware of this shameful episode.
Well told by dispassionate readers.

Confusing but a wild ride into mythologies
Reviewed: 17-08-2020
If you’ve seen the tv series, try to forget it. This is so much more complex and teasing than that. The voices sound spot on to the actors on tv but it’s the richness of the narration that takes the listener to another plane. At times I had to run the story back, convinced I’d missed a vital clue. This happened more and more often as the various plots unwound. Maybe one hearing is not enough to catch every subtly dropped hint along the way. Altogether an exhilarating experience.
