Story
The recently colonized world of Glenlyon has learned that they're stronger when they stand with other star systems than they are on their own. But after helping their neighbor Kosatka against an invasion, Glenlyon has become a target. The aggressive star systems plan to neutralize Glenlyon before striking again. An attack is launched against Glenlyon's orbital facility with forces too powerful for fleet officer Rob Geary to counter using their sole remaining destroyer, Saber.

I wasn't sure about the Genesis Fleet arc to begin with but I've been pleasantly surprised by it overall. Narration is brilliant as usual. I really liked the way it ended with linkage to current timeline.

The space navies are pushed to the limit, the colony worlds are fighting a desperate war against the infected, the economy is on the brink of utter collapse and Earth herself has come under attack. But there is one ray of hope. If a small force can penetrate to the heart of the alien empire and tear it apart, it might just win humanity enough time to save itself and win the war once and for all.

When I saw Wil Wheaton was narrating this again, I was genuinely excited as I loved his narration of the first book... And Wil did not disappoint!
While there weren't as many pop culture references this time around, the story was still intriguing and I wasn't sure which way it was going to go, almost right up to the end.

For the first time in 30 years, however, peace finally seems possible. But though the fighting has stopped, the war is far from over: It’s just gone underground.

Overall great. My only criticism is the way the narrator pronounced New Llanelli. I would have thought a professional narrator would have taken the time to learn how to pronounce place names or words correctly.

Good story. Couple of very annoying pronunciations (admiralty, Gibraltar and Cadiz) took away from an otherwise good performance.

As a child of the late 70's I loved reading this book as I remembered so much of the content and got a major nostalgia kick from it... But, when I came across it in the Audible.com.au store and saw it was narrated by Will Weaton, I just had to get it. There could be no better or more appropriate person to relate this story... And I was not at all disappointed. I highly recommend this book to everyone!

The penultimate volume of the mighty Riftwar Cycle. War rages in Midkemia but behind the chaos there is disquieting evidence of dark forces at work. Jim Dasher’s usually infallible intelligence network has been cleverly dismantled; nowhere is safe. He feels that the world is coming apart at the seams and is helpless to protect his nation. Quiet palace coups are underway in Roldem and Rillanon; and King Gregory of the Isles has yet to produce an heir.
