Story
Thirlmere hides a deadly secret... Drought hits the Lake District, uncovering a skeleton at the bottom of Thirlmere reservoir. The case quickly becomes personal for DI Kelly Porter when she discovers it's the remains of an old classmate, missing for over twenty years. Then a day later, another body is found in a caravan park, its head broken and bloody. Kelly suspects these two crimes are linked. But if she's right, that means there's a ruthless killer somewhere in her community – someone who will do anything to keep the truth buried.

Story
Scores are dead or injured. But who was the killer's true target? On a misty morning in the Lake District, two men depart by helicopter from a private estate. Below, they see the stunning views of Wast Water, with Scafell Pike ahead, where fell runners are competing atop England's highest mountain. It's at this moment that the pilots lose control, and crash into the mountain top. Runners and bystanders are caught in the devastation. This is the scene that greets DI Kelly Porter.

Story
Who is Audrey Hoedemaker? It's a question her sister Maureen has heard more times than she can count, and she doesn't know what the short answer would be. Little sister, troubled teen, backpacker, musical theatre coach, con artist, childcare worker. Murderer. A tragic, traumatic childhood casts a long shadow on the Hoedemaker sisters. Maureen has worked hard to move beyond the violence of the past and build a good, honest life for herself. Audrey, however, just can't seem to do the same, careening from one state of chaos to another.

Not that I am surprised as Caroline Overington always writes brilliant stories but I think she has surpassed herself with this story of the impact of abuse and neglect and how they manifest. Beautiful segway into the tipping point and thorough research into the terrible impact of childhood trauma. I was riveted by the story. Excellent.

Story
When an esteemed criminology professor is found lifeless at an international conference, it's up to DCI Whitney Walker and forensic psychologist Dr. Georgina Cavendish to unravel the mystery. The professor had unveiled Death's Shadow—a ground-breaking but unsettling theory that could redefine the understanding of serial killers. The theory captivated yet unnerved scholars, leaving a lingering air of dread within the conference halls. When another delegate meets a gruesome end, it becomes horrifyingly clear: the conference has become a hunting ground.

Story
Detective Lauren Pengelly has only been part of the Penzance police force for less than two years, but that’s enough time to know that the sleepy Cornish town doesn’t see many murders. So, when the bones of a woman with a hole in her skull are discovered behind a derelict cottage, she immediately assumes the worst. Rallying her team, Lauren is flooded with a strange sense of relief when the bones turn out to be almost twenty years old, not a recent victim. But it quickly turns to dread when she receives her second heart-stopping call of the day–a little girl, Isla, has been kidnapped.

Brilliant detective duo cracking all the cases
Reviewed: 05-10-2024
This brilliantly conceived if somewhat unlikely duo is thoroughly entertaining, riveting and beautifully human! Sally Rigby has created two very believable characters, flawed, funny and smart. They are likeable and I found myself utterly entranced by their relational ‘dance’ which is beautifully and realistically portrayed. Very skilled reading also. Some days I found myself looking forward to finishing work so I could find out what happened next! Now for Book 4!

When a teenage joyrider crashes a stolen car and ends up in a coma, a routine DNA test could be the key to unlocking the mystery of a 20-year-old murder inquiry. Detective Chief Inspector Karen Pirie is an expert at solving the unsolvable. With each cold case closed, justice is served. So, finding the answer should be straightforward, but it's as twisted as the DNA helix itself.
