Story
Steve Wheeler is enjoying retired life in the New Forest. He does the odd bit of investigation work, but he likes his familiar habits and routines. His days of adventure are over: adrenaline is daughter-in-law Amy’s business now. Amy Wheeler thinks adrenaline is good for the soul: she doesn’t stay still long enough for a habit or routine. She’s currently on a private island keeping world-famous author Rosie D’Antonio alive. Which was meant to be an easy job. Then a dead body, a bag of money, and a killer with their sights on Amy mean an end to Steve’s quiet life.

A little confused at the start as the jumping perspectives were harder to keep track of without the core recognisable gang setup from the beginning. But as those relationships developed, I was delighted to hang out with a new gang solving another multi-layer mystery. Love how everyone gets to make a contribution and have there own little triumphs. Looking forward to the next one.

I’d recommend Time of the Cat for fans of Doctor Who and the Chronicles of St Mary’s series. Think cosy and fun time travel plus heaps of loveable quirky characters (cat and human) getting into scrapes together.
Has a pleasingly warm fuzzy after-read effect.

Story
Tamsyn Muir’s Gideon the Ninth unveils a solar system of swordplay, cut-throat politics, and lesbian necromancers. Her characters leap out of the audio, as skillfully animated as arcane revenants. The result is a heart-pounding epic science fantasy. Brought up by unfriendly, ossifying nuns, ancient retainers, and countless skeletons, Gideon is ready to abandon a life of servitude and an afterlife as a reanimated corpse.

Story
1887. London, but not as you know it. The Industrial Revolution went further than anyone could have imagined, and the sprawling, chaotic metropolis of Even Greater London spreads across the entire southern half of England. The immense Tower casts electricity through the sky, powering the mind-boggling mechanisms of the city around it. The engineer-army of Isambard Kingdom Brunel swarms across the capital, building, demolishing, and rebuilding whatever they see fit. And at the heart of all this sits the country's first Private Investigation Agency.

Marion’s reading really is wonderful. As for the stories, what a bargain getting 3 books for 1 credit and canny too, I’m hooked. The mix of gentile Regency setting with “afflicted” ie polite zombies was a hoot and so we’ll drawn out. I liked protagonist Hannah at the start because of her skills and consistent empathy. Though she did get a bit whiney at times, by book 3 she’s the more self-assured women I’d love to spend more time with. Execution of the mystery aspect improved by book 3. I’m there for the slow burn romance. And I can’t not mention how much I love the Addams Family vibes with Barnes and Frank!

Although barely making ends meet, this is the quiet, supernatural-adjacent life Greta's dreamed of since childhood. But when a sect of murderous monks emerges, killing human and undead alike, Greta must use her unusual skills to keep her supernatural clients - and the rest of London - safe.

Enjoyable

I loved the the “doctor to the undead” concept. I liked Greta and her harem of otherworldly gentlemen. And I enjoyed the story enough to start cleaning the house as an excuse to keep listening.
I would’ve liked at least one other female character amount the main cast. And I really wish the editor had left a pause between sections of text. Jumping between character perspectives without a lead or pause was confusing and a disservice to the story.

A Series of Events
Reviewed: 08-12-2023
The title was apt. The plot involved a series of events, one after another. But it wasn’t till over a third of the way in that something happened that offered tension that last more than a chapter. I kept thinking, where is this story going. But overall I was entertained.
