Story
Spanning the years 1900 to 1977, The Covenant of Water is set in Kerala, on South India’s Malabar Coast, and follows three generations of a family that suffers a peculiar affliction: in every generation, at least one person dies by drowning—and in Kerala, water is everywhere. At the turn of the century, a twelve-year-old girl from Kerala’s long-existing Christian community, grieving the death of her father, is sent by boat to her wedding, where she will meet her forty-year-old husband for the first time.

The Ties that bind
Reviewed: 25-05-2024
I had been looking for something different to listen to and having read Cutting For Stone and loved it I had this in my wish list for weeks thinking I would eventually get to it, but always choosing something else.
Finally I started....what a treat and a joy to listen to the author read his amazing book.
All of the threads winding their way over decades to end up binding together.
So beautifully written and narrated. It will stay in my mind for a long time.

Story
Charlie Reade looks like a regular high school kid, great at baseball and football, a decent student. But he carries a heavy load. His mom was killed in a hit-and-run accident when he was 10, and grief drove his dad to drink. Charlie learned how to take care of himself—and his dad. Then, when Charlie is 17, he meets a dog named Radar and his aging master, Howard Bowditch, a recluse in a big house at the top of a big hill, with a locked shed in the backyard. Sometimes strange sounds emerge from it.

Terrible male voices
Reviewed: 13-03-2022
This narrator is terrible when trying to narrate a man’s voice or a woman apart from the main person.
She just talks or screeches at the back of the throat and is very unpleasant to listen to.
The book is worth listening to if you can put up with the voices

This book didn't even start to get interesting for the first 5 hours! It then got more absurd as it went along. The narrator was annoying too and over dramatised. All in all one of the worst books I have listened to for a long time!

This story points out how easy it is to doubt the ones we think we know. Do I believe him because I have known him for a long time, or do I listen to the evidence and people who are creating my doubt. Many people have trusted and been wrong! What should I do??

Brilliant. Do not miss this book!
Reviewed: 13-09-2014
"I don't normally write reviews although I have listened to many good books. This was one of the best listens I have heard for a long time if not ever. David Raker finds missing people and from the start of the story to the finish the mystery and tension did not let up. I did not see the end coming at all. The best part of it is that I have discovered Tim Weaver has written several David Raker novels and as soon as I finish writing this review, I am going to download another.",
