The Absorbent Mind cover art

It’s all here in her brilliant method

I do agree with other reviewers that the narrator does sound somewhat robotic like Siri. However, I found her voice to be be soothing and easy to “absorb” the books content. I really felt like Maria Montessori was speaking directly to me, which cannot be conveyed without the help of the narrator, so overall I give the performance 5 stars. I don’t need to say much more about the book’s content aside than it’s the most brilliant and profound understanding and practice we’ve ever seen in education and needs to replace and become the main standard of education practiced across all schools if we desire to foster the highest functioning human beings to reach their real potential.

There are numerous editing errors and bizarre sounds towards the end. This is a very worthwhile book that I recommend reading. However, I do not recommend purchasing the audible book until they have re-recorded and re-edited this to a satisfactory condition to be on Audible.

By far one of the best books on Science

I’ve always had the same thoughts and questions about science that Rupert talks about in this book. It’s so nice to finally find a book that looks into scientific dogma in such a clear and detailed way. It also made a big difference having the author narrate his own book. Rupert was a real pleasure to listen to. I definitely recommend all science and medicine students read or listen to this book. It’s time to overcome the blatant ignorance and follies of science and allow humanity to tap into its full potential.

What disappointed you about The Essential Dogen?

I wish I could have listened to this book. Unfortunately the narrator is so poor I just couldn't even get through the first chapter. I will be returning this book.

Who was your favorite character and why?

I wasn't able to listen, but I'm sure it would have been Dogen. I love his work and the way he's able to express Zen in such a clear manner. I plan to buy the book and read it instead.

What didn’t you like about Brian Nishii’s performance?

This is the second audio book that I've purchased with Nishii narrating and I returned that book too because I just couldn't listen to him. Unfortunately I hadn't realised it was the same narrator until after I'd made the purchase. I'm sure he's probably a nice guy, but narration just isn't his gig. Firstly, he doesn't seem to connect with the discourse, which makes it difficult for the reader to become absorbed. Secondly, his intonation is all over the place. He doesn't seem to know when to rise and when to fall, which makes it difficult to follow anything he's saying because you end up paying attention to his voice rather than the content. I'm guessing Nishii is from Japanese descent as he does pronounce Japanese words perfectly, however I don't think this is a reason to always use him to narrate books about Japanese culture and religion. I want to listen to a lot of the books that Nishii narrates, but I can't. There are so many brilliant narrators out there. I think listeners need another option.

Any additional comments?

A note to the publishers. Please redo this audio book with a better narrator (preferably an Englishman as they always seem to be more talented) and then I will purchase again.

Listen without the commentary

I’ve heard some excellent narrators and some really terrible ones on Audible, and Paul Bazely is definitely one of the better ones. He delivers the tone and atmosphere of the Gita perfectly. With regards to the book, the first half has Easwaran’s commentary before each chapter of the Gita and the second half has the Gita translation only. I found the commentary either just repeated the Gita or that his opinions were misleading, contradictory or just missed the point entirely. Where on the other hand his translation seems to touch on real depth and wisdom. My recommendation is to skip the commentary (don’t waste your time), and start at chapter 20 where you can listen to Gita translation only.

Wise agreements that can be applied with practice

The four agreements are delivered in a way that is easy to understand and apply to every day life. The concept about living in a dream is also easy to assimilate. The only qualm I had was with the last 11min where he gives a “Christan” prayer that sounds completely contradictory to the Toltec wisdom given in the rest of the book. This ending left me doubting the authors credibility. I recommend listening up until the prayer then stop and you will be satisfied with the wisdom of the Toltec tradition.
