Story
A superb novel set in classic Stephen King territory - a small new England town about to be engulfed by terror. Turn off the television - in fact, why don't you turn off all the lights except for the one over your favourite chair? - and we'll talk about vampires here in the dim. I think I can make you believe in them. Stephen King, from the introduction. Salem's Lot is a small New England town with the usual quota of gossips, drinkers, weirdos and respectable folk.

Slow start, good in the end.

Probably just me struggling a little with the genre, but I found a lot of the story to be painfully slow, with the eventual action parts reasonably good. I found it difficult to remain focused on the story for large parts of the story.

Story
Each of us has a place to return to in our minds, a place of clarity and peace, a place to think, to create, to dream. For Bryce Courtenay this place was a waterhole in Africa where he used to escape to as a boy, in search of solitude. One evening, while lingering there, he witnessed the tallest of the great beasts drinking from the waterhole in the moonlight, and was spellbound. Ever since, he drew inspiration from this moment.

A short though beautiful epilogue to an amazing author as he knew he was approaching the end of a remarkable life. I’m not sure if there has been anything quite like it.

Story
For amiable city trader Jimmy Corby money was the new rock n' roll. His whole life was a party, adrenaline charged and cocaine fuelled. If he hadn't met Monica, he would probably have ended up either dead or in rehab. But Jimmy was as lucky in love as he was at betting on dodgy derivatives, so instead of burning out, his star just burned brighter than ever. Rich, pampered and successful; Jimmy; Monica; and their friends lived the dream, bringing up their children with an army of domestic helps.

A very Elton story
Reviewed: 19-10-2024
Typically Elton, though far from his best. Some of Ben Elton's books have been up there with all time favourites, not this one though, which was just okay. I've listened to the narrator do so many Andy McNab books that I kept thinking I was in a Nick Stone story! Terrible Aussie accent, but otherwise a fine performance.

Story
In 1838, 11 convicts and former convicts were put on trial for the brutal murder of 28 Aboriginal men, women and children at Myall Creek in Northern New South Wales. The trial created an enormous amount of controversy because it was almost unknown for Europeans to be charged with the murder of Aborigines. It would become the most serious trial of mass murder in Australia’s history.

A John Plunkett biography
Reviewed: 13-10-2024
A wonderfully researched telling of the shameful massacre and the ensuing trials, that ends up being more of a Plunkett biography really, which isn't a bad thing. Plunkett is almost unknown, yet had a huge influence on Australia's early judicial system. A remarkable Australian who should be remembered. This book does that very well.

Hudson Fysh was a decorated World War I hero who not only founded Australia's national airline, Qantas, but steered it for almost half a century from its humble beginnings with two rickety biplanes to the age of the jumbo jets. One of Australia's celebrated Light Horsemen at Gallipoli, Fysh went on to fly death-defying missions for Lawrence of Arabia with the Australian Flying Corps and battle Germans in deadly dogfights in the skies over Palestine.

The narration was great, though I dropped a star off for several mispronounced names of several Queensland outback towns.

'It is an axiom of behavioural science that vampires are territorial while cannibals range widely.' Hannibal killed nine people before he was caught. And five on his escape. Two of his victims survived - one of them is in an asylum; but the other craves revenge. Mason Verger, a paraplegic confined to a respirator since his encounter with Dr Lecter, can move only the fingers of his crippled right hand across the soft blanket that covers his lifeless body.

The best of the series in my opinion. Red Dragon is great and Silence got all the publicity, though this is at least as good, probably better than them both. Fast paced, with plenty of gore and horror that you’d expect. The ending could kind have been predicted, though was no less dramatic because of it. The narration was fantastic, though the voice of ‘Mason’ was too difficult to understand and at times rather annoying.
