I love Nicola Walker's narration. What a spell binding story. Made you think of the impossible decisions and how those decisions impacted the characters, and what decision you might make in the same situation. Refreshing to have such a different and compelling story. Loved it.

Brilliant

I would not have chosen this book from the title, or the cover, or the blurb, but it was free and I thought it would fill a gap between credits. Wow. I loved it. I just feel it was a tad long, and towards the end it became slightly 50 shades of grey-ish, not that the sex scenes were over the top, but it slid pretty strongly into romance. Don’t let that distract you from the cracking story, brilliant characters and best of all, perfect narration. Not an easy book to narrate, I would have thought, but the narrator did a brilliant job. I am still new to audible and have found the choice of narrator can make or break a book. A wonderfully different storyline, told beautifully.

Story
It was four o'clock in the morning. A young woman pushed through the hospital doors. Staff would later say they thought the woman was a new mother, returning to her child - and in a way, she was. She walked into the nursery, where a baby girl lay sleeping. The infant didn't wake when the woman placed her gently in the shopping bag she had brought with her. There is CCTV footage of what happened next, and most Australians would have seen it, either on the internet or the news.

The narration of this story was top rate. Totally believable 1st person characters. It made for a thoroughly enjoyable story. Engaging, sad, funny, very sad, delightful, honest…. I found the story telling very visual. Would make a great movie. The story itself was skilfully written, but for me the narration just made it. Thoroughly enjoyable. We all know these characters.

Lots of twists and turns. I found I did become quite invested in finding out where all the loose ends fitted in a d found myself creating opportunities to listen to the next chapter or three. The narrator did a pretty good job and was not difficult to listen to.

An easy way to spend quite a few hours!

I quite enjoyed this book. I liked the very diverse characters and the ability to identify them from the narrators portrayal, with one e caption, and I have had this with other audio books too. The voice of the child characters I find extremely difficult to accept and do not enjoy.
with this book, I could and did eventually get past that, but in previous books it's been enough to stop me going further.
The story itself had lots of twists and turns, and I particularly enjoyed the interviews at the end both with the author and the narrator which gave a much deeper insight.

Story
Caroline Overington's stunning fiction debut is a multi-voiced novel centred around a child's death and its terrible repercussions. In 1982 Victorian police were called to a home on a housing estate an hour west of Melbourne. There, they found a five-year-old boy lying still and silent on the carpet. There were no obvious signs of trauma, but the child, Jacob, died the next day. The story made the headlines, and hundreds attended the funeral. Few people were surprised when the boy's mother and her boyfriend went to prison for the crime.

Something a little different
Reviewed: 21-02-2022
I enjoyed this story. I had an empathy for the characters and enjoyed the different sections of the book being told by various characters point of view.
The narrators managed multiple characters quite distinctly.
Only occasionally were the Australian accents so strong they almost became a caricature of themselves.
I would read from this author again.
