Story
America Last is a guide for the perplexed, identifying and tracing a persuasion—or the "illiberal imagination"—that has animated conservative politics for a century now. Since the 1940s, the Right has railed against communist fellow travelers in America. Heilbrunn finally corrects the record, showing that dictator worship is a longstanding tradition within modern American conservatism that cannot be ignored—and what it means for us today.

Whether it is WWI, WWII, the Gulf War or Putin’s invasion of Ukraine, Heilbrunn explains how the right is quick to blame the West and defend the dictators (whether left or right). The GOP detests the American experiment and craves monarchy/ autocracy and strongmen. Nothing changes.

Amazing how the US seems incapable of or unwilling to elect a female president. It will happen and maybe sooner than we think as Joe steps aside for Kamala in 2025/6?

Story
In the aftermath of the 2020 presidential election, Donald Trump and many around him, including certain other elected Republican officials, intentionally breached their oath to the US Constitution: they ignored the rulings of dozens of courts, plotted to overturn a lawful election, and provoked a violent attack on the Capitol. Liz Cheney, one of the few Republican officials to take a stand against these efforts, witnessed the attack first-hand, and then helped lead the Congressional Select Committee investigation into how it happened.

Liz Cheney skilfully describes the deliberate and systematic unlawful attempts by Trump to deny the peaceful transition of power. Time and time again, the shameful and blatant abuse of power by Trump and his acolytes is presented with incontrovertible evidence. Cheney emerges as one of the greatest examples of heroism and patriotism in US history.

Rory writes with great honesty on his naïveté and self belief which ultimately is in the zone of delusion. His colleagues can see clearly his failings but what’s refreshing about Rory is he doesn’t. He presses on in vanity. It’s a great tale about how candour and integrity are a negative in politics.

Story
The relationship between the US and China, the world's two superpowers, is peculiarly volatile. It rests on a seismic fault of cultural misunderstanding, historical grievance and ideological incompatibility. No other nations are so quick to offend and be offended. Former Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd, who has studied, lived in and worked with China for more than 40 years, is one of the very few people who can offer real insight into the mindsets of the leadership whose judgement will determine if a war will be fought.

Story
American evangelical Christianity has lost its way. While the witness of the church before a watching world is diminished beyond recognition, congregations are torn apart over Donald Trump, Christian nationalism, racial injustice, sexual predation, disgraced leaders, and covered-up scandals. Left behind are millions of believers who counted on the church to be a place of belonging and hope. As greater and greater numbers of younger Americans bleed out from the church, even the most rooted evangelicals are wondering, “Can American Christianity survive?”

The author does an excellent job in explaining the origins of contemporary white nationalism in the US, including explaining the ‘ecumenical’ link between ‘radical’ traditional Catholics and white evangelicals. An extraordinary indictment of how the Gospel has been interpreted by white nationalists committed to coercion and power.

Story
Jon Ward's life is divided in half: two decades inside the evangelical Christian bubble and two decades outside of it. In Testimony, Ward tells the engaging story of his upbringing in, and eventual break from, an influential evangelical church in the 1980s and 1990s. Ward sheds light on the evangelical movement's troubling political and cultural dimensions, tracing the ways in which the Jesus People movement was seduced by materialism and other factors to become politically captive rather than prophetic.

A genuine offering
Reviewed: 22-05-2023
Wow! I have just spent the last few days caught up in this extraordinary account. This testimony of Jon’s is indeed raw, honest and direct. As someone from a deep background in a Trad Catholic community, Jon’s life journey resonated deeply with me. I’m so grateful for Jon’s honesty in tracking how a religious community can shape not only one’s personal life but that of a larger group- in this case the bizarre nature of the MAGA phenomenon. We are living in a world where the very nature of reality is constantly being challenged. This powerful and compelling narrative offers the listener/ reader an insight into how we can make a difference, albeit modest, but nonetheless valuable. Listening to Jon’s voice adds to the depth and poignancy of his work. I am thankful for this contribution to the debate of how we can improve our lives and society.
