Story
The Year 1000 is a vivid evocation of how English people lived a thousand years ago - no spinach, sugar or Caesarean operations in which the mother had any chance of survival, but a world that knew brain surgeons, property developers and, yes, even the occasional gossip columnist. In the spirit of modern investigative journalism, Lacey and Danziger interviewed the leading historians and archaeologists in their field.

I only manage to finish about 1 book a year (I start about 10) as they are generally boring and predictable but this is the first this year I could finish. Left me wanting to hear more

Story
Richard Dawkins' brilliant reformulation of the theory of natural selection has the rare distinction of having provoked as much excitement and interest outside the scientific community as within it. His theories have helped change the whole nature of the study of social biology, and have forced thousands to rethink their beliefs about life.

Best non fiction book I’ve read so far

Sometimes the exposition is long winded but you can really understand quite tricky concepts by the end of the book. Amazing opens your eyes to a whole other way of looking at the world. Unfortunately another book I read of his didn’t have the same fire but I have listened to this book 2-3 times whereas usually I only finish one in 10 books and usually give up after half an hour or so.

I can tell it is not scientifically rigorous eg the bit about lions vs humans demeanour at being top of the food chain. But it is interesting and spurs thinking and I finished the book which is rare for me

Story
Beginning with their introduction in the 11th century, and ending with their widespread abandonment in the 17th, Marc Morris explores many of the country's most famous castles, as well as some spectacular lesser-known examples. At times this is an epic tale, driven by characters like William the Conqueror, King John, and Edward I, full of sieges and conquest on an awesome scale.

I don’t have a particular genre I like, all I ask is that the author is knowledgeable about a subject and can write in an engaging style and that is exactly what thus book delivers. I can finish very few books even ones that are very highly regarded but I could probably even listen to this one again

Story
The Voyage of the Beagle - or, to give it its full title, Journal of researches into the Natural History and Geology of the Countries visited during the Voyage round the World of H.M.S. Beagle under command of Captain FitzRoy, R.N. - is much more than merely an account of Darwin's scientific observations in his 1831 - 36 travels across the globe: it is fine travel writing in its own right.

A cross between Lord of the flies and Starship Troopers. I usually don't finish a book but this one not only did I finish it but reread parts. Maybe I'm still a young boy dreaming of conquering the Universe
