Story
Drawing on previously unpublished eyewitness accounts, prizewinning historian Donald L. Miller has written what critics are calling one of the most powerful accounts of warfare ever published. Here are the horror and heroism of World War II in the words of the men who fought it, the journalists who covered it, and the civilians who were caught in its fury. Miller gives us an up-close, deeply personal view of a war that was more savagely fought - and whose outcome was in greater doubt - than one might imagine. This is the war that Americans on the home front would have read about had they had access to previously censored testimony.

I'd previously listened to 'The rise and fall of the 3rd Reich' multiple times so I have a decent understanding of events from the European point of view. I had minimal to no idea what went on in the pacific/Asian part of the war.
this book is from Americans about America's contributions to the war. pretty much ignores every other allied country involved. which worked for me as that was the part of the war I knew minimal about.
quite a nice surprise one of my favorite readers read this book. was quite difficult at first remembering its a history based on real events. I've listened to him read so many fantasy books previously.
quite happy with this book.

the story is heartwarming.
but this book doesn't need to be 8 hours. the guys don't meet till their 80s, and for some reason we get both life stories first... 8 hours but it takes 7 hours before their paths cross.
the last hour repeatedly states the heartwarming themes over and over and over.
totally worth listening to for free. I'd recommend skipping to the last hour ish so you only get the story a few times.

Story
Titan is the first full-length biography based on unrestricted access to Rockefeller’s exceptionally rich trove of papers. A landmark publication full of startling revelations, the book indelibly alters our image of this most enigmatic capitalist. Born the son of a flamboyant, bigamous snake-oil salesman and a pious, straitlaced mother, Rockefeller rose from rustic origins to become the world’s richest man by creating America’s most powerful and feared monopoly, Standard Oil. Branded "the Octopus" by legions of muckrakers, the trust refined and marketed nearly 90 percent of the oil produced in America.

first of all I think the reader is perfect for these sorts of books. I previously listened to the rise and fall of the 3rd Reich and he made history easy to listen to. so I randomly chose this book next not knowing about John D Rockefeller.
I really enjoyed the book and find John a next level interesting guy. frankly I have no problem with his early business methods when I consider the rule book hadn't been written yet. we need guys like him to show us where some rules are needed.
was his methods fair? no, but life isn't fair.
this book is worth listening to to make your own decision.
it's a 10/10 from me

Spoilers ahead.
I hate the australian accent quite a bit. but funnily enough that played to the advantage of the book. the characters were quite thoroughly aussies and (thanks to an Aussie reader) sounded the part.
the preview about the book was extremely misleading probably to make it less obvious about the twist.
first the subject of gays in the book sounded like the joke side of things... then it became the entire theme for the book.
the ending had promise to be a nice surprise having the main character die... and then she doesn't which was a complete letdown.
there was an extreme amount of unnecessary detail about things at times that only make sense if you are from aussie/ nz or something.
kinda felt like I was listening to adds about random products throughout the story.
but yeah, considering I got this book for free, and the aussie accent was funny enough to stick around listening to. it was ok. hearing an Aussie say the f word is funny.

I went from fantasy epics to this book. I had it in my library for months before I started listening.
there was so much specific information that I wasn't sure if be able to continue. however, the reader was absolutely excellent and we'll spoken. soon it was normal to listen for 8+ hours daily at work.
I've learned a lot, and I remember more than I was expecting. however, I do struggle with the amount of names. I remember each guy as what they do as that feels easier.
I strongly recommend this to all. especially those who push bigger governments and the removal of free speech.
5/5 all around.

I'm a long time fan of MR. There are several reasons I don't think much of this book.
1. the guy who reads it has one ok voice and the rest are cringe worthy...
2. with how much 'impossible' stuff that happens you quickly don't care about the so called risks. As jack west is fine. if anything, you start hoping characters get killed off to put more at steak. at least the 3rd scarecrow book killed off a main character.
3. In fictional books I am open to a lot of stuff and seldom get bothered by the details. gruesome or not. what I am sick of in this series is the continued mockery of the Bible. I can ignore plenty but this series is one non stop cherry picking mockery. every second sentence is on the topic... and some of what MR comes up with to continue the plot is just dumb. I quite enjoyed the 5 greatest warriors even with it's mocking of the Bible.. but MR just goes on and on and on...
4. to continue my 3rd point, this book and series though fictional screams "I want to be taken seriously!!!". how many dozen times did a character see the monitors and somehow instantly think "that's a neanderthal...". every single character somehow thought that option before the normal thought of; 'another group of people'... I am confident MR believes some people groups are superior than others by this continued train of thought. I see people shorter than me with a different shaped head and it never popped to my mind they are half evolved...
the main characters are from all over the world... surely one would think a little different to the others.. it feels extremely forced into the books.
5. I love the dig at trump. lol. as soon as that scene started I guessed where it would end up. it's a fictional book series... I'd be totally cool if the president was assassinated and that to be that. it's fictional. also, after refusing to say the president's name in other books, why start now? could have done a lot different.. this book puts a lot of real enough events that it wants to be taken seriously. I feel it forgets it is just a made up book. MR so wants his beliefs to be true. lol.
I'll unlikely buy the next in the series. I can only imagine what sort of book it will be.
the only book of MR's I think is worse is that 'secret runners of New York'. that's a seriously crap book unless you are a 13 year old girl.

A thousand years ago evil came to the land and has ruled with an iron hand ever since. The sun shines fitfully under clouds of ash that float down endlessly from the constant eruption of volcanoes. A dark lord rules through the aristocratic families, and ordinary folk are condemned to lives in servitude, sold as goods, labouring in the ash fields. But now a troublemaker has arrived, and there is rumour of revolt.

I know how good Brandon Sanderson is with writing from his "a way of Kings" series and his help with the wheel of Time ending. that's why I know he can do so much better. it felt like a child wrote this book. A very dull, slow paced
lack of depth book. I really like the reader and that's why I have listened to most the book. otherwise I recommend you buy any of Brandon's other work before this book. by how bad the book is I am guessing without looking it up this was one of his earlier books. it feels like it.

Why do so many people think the Bible, the most influential book in world history, is outdated? Why do our friends and neighbors - and sometimes we ourselves - dismiss the Bible as irrelevant, irrational, immoral, or all of these things? This explanation of the Book of Exodus, the second book of the Bible, will demonstrate that the Bible is not only powerfully relevant to today’s issues, but completely consistent with rational thought.
