Story
The motivations behind today's most successful leaders and entrepreneurs come to a simple yet decisive explanation: there are people who give, people who take, people who match and people who fake. Our world is filled with these givers, takers, matchers and fakers. Amazingly, those who succeed (not only personally but for their clients and companies) don't take or match. They give. (Although they're not necessarily philanthropic.)

Good, but...

So many sporting references that I found myself hanging for those sections to end. They were painful. The narrator was quite robotic, which detracted from the book, for me. I love Adam Grant, but I didn't enjoy this one, unfortunately.

Story
Intelligence is usually seen as the ability to think and learn, but in a rapidly changing world, there's another set of cognitive skills that might matter more: the ability to rethink and unlearn. In recent months, the pandemic has forced us all to reevaluate our assumptions about health and safety and multiple acts of police brutality have challenged most of us to reconsider our responsibility for fighting racism. Yet in our daily lives, too many of us still favor the comfort of conviction over the discomfort of doubt.

Story
The key to living a happier, healthier life is inside us. Our gut is almost as important to us as our brain or our heart, yet we know very little about how it works. In Gut, Giulia Enders shows that rather than the utilitarian and - let's be honest - somewhat embarrassing body part we imagine it to be, it is one of the most complex, important, and even miraculous parts of our anatomy.

As a Scientist by training, I really enjoyed the simplicity of the story telling and learnt a lot about the gut. The story was fantasy and in some parts hilarious, and the performance was incredible. I will definitely be revisiting this book again soon, and making some changes to my diet in the meantime.

Story
Hugh van Cuylenburg was a primary school teacher volunteering in northern India when he had a life-changing realisation: despite the underprivileged community the children were from, they were remarkably positive. By contrast, back in Australia Hugh knew that all too many children struggled with depression, social anxieties and mental illness. His own little sister had been ravaged by anorexia nervosa. How was it that young people he knew at home, who had food, shelter, friends and a loving family, struggled with their mental health, while these kids seemed so contented and resilient?

Scott narrates this wonderfully. I saw him speak at a recent event and I was inspired by him to support his cause and listen to his story. A truly inspiring life turned around, and evidence that you should never give up on anyone. That "technical" problem they solved in Ethiopia?! If nothing else, that was life changing for the entire country. Scott and his entire team and supporters are amazing.

Story
Tara Westover and her family grew up preparing for the End of Days but, according to the government, she didn’t exist. She hadn’t been registered for a birth certificate. She had no school records because she’d never set foot in a classroom, and no medical records because her father didn’t believe in hospitals. As she grew older, her father became more radical and her brother more violent. At 16, Tara knew she had to leave home. In doing so she discovered both the transformative power of education, and the price she had to pay for it.

I am in awe of her strength and look forward to hearing more from her. Will definitely listed to this one again.
