Mournful, Atmospheric Murder Mystery

Hell Bay is a good, fast-paced read. The characters are interesting and the detail in surroundings fascinating. It really does pull you into the story. The story itself has a mournful tone, and while answers are eventually found, it did not feel successful. I found the romance aspect to the story completely unnecessary and a little embarrassing to read. A small subplot in the same genre of the story would have performed better.

Overall, it was a good one to read with only a few scraps left unexplained.

Just as the novel before this one, I thoroughly enjoyed this read. The characters are so well shaped, the storyline so riveting that it is somehow almost overwhelming to read at times. I find these books harder to digest than others in this genre, but if you're wanting a great story to suck you in for the long haul, this would be the series for you.

Was on the edge of my seat for most of this story. Fascinating characters with mysteries that kept me guessing up until the penultimate moments. It had the suspense of a 'quick and easy' thriller but the depth of a proper mystery. Absolutely loved it. Narration was excellent also. There were a couple of loose ends pertaining to the main characters but hopefully those storylines will continue into the next books.
Highly recommend!

I love Joy Ellis's novels, and have to say that this is one of the best. A great balance between person/professional life and loved reading more about certain characters. Didn't work out the ending until we were almost there and the suspense is great all the way through.
Looking forward to the next one.

Lovely story by Mhairi McFarlane. Narrator was excellent and storyline was sweet. I was not prepared for the poignant sadness that decorates many areas of the story, but enjoyed it nonetheless. This isn't the lightest of light reads. Dare I say, it is Chick Lit with substance. A story that will make you think past the general romances and focus more on the characters and their development.

Let Down by Narration

This is a sweet story although cheesy. The writing is very basic and the monologues simple and fairly unnatural, however this isn't necessarily a bad thing if you're after some easy reading.

The main reason I would not recommend this one is the narrator. I found it near unbearable and almost stopped listening multiple times. It would have been FAR better to have a narrator who is a WOC, instead of someone putting on (terrible) accents. The reading of other characters is also exceptionally lacking. There are unexplained pauses, emphasis on words that don't need them and character accents mixed up. The narration does not lend well to the story at all, and sadly made it very difficult to listen to.

I really think this story would be a nice holiday read if you were to have the actual book (or ebook), however the narration on this audio version unfortunately ruined it.

I enjoyed the process of this story. The characters are excellent and the storyline is interesting (though unbelievable in quite a few points). Ultimately, the continuing thrill of mystery and shock was enjoyable throughout, however there was no climax, or big shock moment that was led up to. In fact, while the ending made sense and wasn't disappointing as such, I did finish the book feeling a little unsatisfied. It's not a bad read, but I'll likely not recommend it as a 'must read' in this genre.

I really enjoy Dervla McTiernan's writing. She has a wonderful knack for transporting you to the dreary landscape of Europe where her characters are set. Like her others, I enjoyed this one immensely. I did find that I had to properly concentrate to follow the story. There is a lot of information and a lot of names and histories to keep track of. The story evolves around police corruption and so it is vital that the reader is able to keep up with who and where and when in order to stay ahead of the mystery with Cormac. I did enjoy the storyline, but the continuous complications did get a little tiring by the end.

Aoife McMahon, as always, is a delight.

I loved this! Was so skeptical that it couldn't possibly be as good as The Flat Share, but it really was. The warmth, the endearing characters, the fact that one of the protagonists is a sweet elderly lady? It was such a lovely book to read and I will 100% be reading it again! The performance was great, storyline was funny and heartwarming, and the romance/s are poignant and beautifully portrayed.

Can't wait for whatever Beth O'Leary brings out next!
