Story
Paul McAllister, an aging military retiree, wants nothing more at this point in his life than to put the wars, cancer, and death of his wife behind him as he numbly glides into his final years doing the only thing he still enjoys – selling weapons and his services as a gunsmith on the gun show circuit of the American southwest. Driving down the road in the Mesilla Valley of southern New Mexico, sandwiched in the few hundred yards between the Robledo Mountains to the West and the Rio Grande to the East, Paul loses consciousness while returning home from a gun show.

Great story
Reviewed: 06-05-2023
I loved this simple time travel story. The MC is totally overpowered by the supply’s brought back in time and the knowledge he has of history and gold fields locations. But the story is charming.
I found the narration a little slow with an old man narrating his memoirs vibe. Not enough to stop me listening and I got used to it.

The end credits are still rolling and I am already johnessing for the next book. An interesting story although perhaps a little slow as the MC is not quickly becoming op. I am frustrated that he does not sell dungeon finding as that would seem to be a massive money maker.

His code name is Mr Clark. And his work for the CIA is brilliant, cold-blooded, and efficient...but who is he really? In a harrowing tour de force, Tom Clancy shows how an ordinary man named John Kelly crossed the lines of justice and morality - to become the CIA legend, Mr Clark.
This is an unforgettable journey into the heart of darkness. Without mercy. Without guilt. Without remorse.

Great to have a version I can bear to listen too. Michael Pritchard does a great job. I love the story but the world view of the protagonist is very fixed. Perhaps showing the era it was written in.

Didn’t work for me

I had problems with the story in this. The language was just so over done and momentous. Why write one word when 10 will do. I gave it 10 hours but I just don’t care what happened in the story.

I really liked this book, nearly had to chuck a sickie so I could keep reading/listening.
I have read a number of LitRPGs and this one stood out as being a higher quality fantasy story within an RPG environment.
Character development is ok and the pacing has a good mix of crafting vs action. The story felt well balanced to me although personal relationships between players beyond friendship is yet to be explored.
I recommend this book but in terms of the audio version, as with many books in this genre, I find the stats rundowns and skill reviews very disruptive. I would normally skim read them in a book. Having said that, the reference to stats is not overly frequent. Give it a go.

A bit complicated for Audio
Reviewed: 10-09-2017
I really enjoyed this book and was using the audio between sections of reading. The quality of the performance was great, I just find this genre does not lend itself well to audio and I found it much easier to read.

Basic story is fine but lots of politics
Reviewed: 14-09-2016
Found the premise of the story to be fine but at times the book felt like a vehicle to present right wing politics. Very simple solutions to complex world problems. I found this distracting from what the story was. Enough here to get me on to the next in the series though.
