About this listen

A dark night. A darker secret.

On a cold, dark night, two cars collide …

Inside the vehicle at fault, Jennifer Ashby survives with barely a scratch. In the wreckage of the second, the occupants are not so lucky. Jennifer’s good character helps her escape jail, but she is traumatised by the event.

Desperate for a change, and with her marriage buckling under the stress, she convinces her husband Jon to move to the beautiful but wild Daintree region, far away from family and friends.

As Jon spends long hours at his new job and Jennifer makes plans to absolve her lingering guilt, cracks begin to form in their idyllic new life. Will the shadow of their past continue to haunt them? Will their dark secret be exposed?

A captivating domestic thriller for fans of Sally Hepworth and Liane Moriarty.

'Thoroughly absorbing, sharply plotted ... a formidable new talent in the twisty domestic thriller genre.' - Nicola Moriarty

'Propulsive and gripping.' - Ali Lowe

'Taut and atmospheric.' - Petronella McGovern

Unexpected and real, with a somewhat frustrating at times lead character

I enjoyed the story, and the familiar territory of the Northern Beaches and QLD setting. The author has also vividly captured the reality of what happens when we're faced with a terrifying situation requiring a quick response. I found myself getting impatient with the main character's inability to get into gear 🤣

Just Average

The story was okay, but the voice of Jennifer was a bit much, that i was surprised i even made it to the end. She read without any emotion and sounded so much older than her character.
Listening to this after Silent Sister which was excellent and easy to follow made this a bit of a let down, especially after reading some good reviews.

Nice light holiday listen

Narrator did an amazing job. It was good, kept me entertained but ending got a bit ridiculous in my opinion.

Good storyline

Wasn’t impressed with the narrator, she was a bit boring and the different characters were lost in her interpretation.

Twist at the End

I quite enjoyed the story, although Jennifer’s lack of action was at times quite frustrating. Sometimes the depictions of the scenery were a little over the top.
I enjoyed the narrator’s voice and tone, however her phrasing in reading sentences was very irritating. The Epilogue gave some clear examples of peculiar modulations of voice after unusual pauses in sentences.
Overall it was entertaining to listen to.

it was a fantastic book, with a get final unexpected twist. I didn't want to stop listening and the narrating was well done.

The main characters naivety and strength - the setting of FNQ

It was overall a good listen l liked the constant twists and turns and especially the setting and descriptions of FNQ but the narrator really did not do the book justice
