Very measured...just like the man
Reviewed: 15-03-21
Lots to enjoy here. He does come across as quite professorial at times...and the only jarring notes are where he always seems to see people at a time that somehow predict future events (such as a Trumo) that does have more than a bit of post-event rationalisation to it. All in all though a clearly very good man doing a very important job very well.

Story
Happiness is impossible to define and illusory. How then are we to lead happier lives? Life is hard, messy and complex; our friends will probably let us down; most of what has got us here is blind luck and a series of false starts. But if we can learn to separate what we can control - our thoughts and actions - from all else beyond our control, we can find a surer footing with which to greet the world.

Lovely intro to Happy...only gave a 4 as worth investing the time in the full book which is a massive 5.

Story
There has been a people's revolt against the way the West has been run. Brexit, Trump, the recent British and French elections saw millions of people shouting that they were sick to death of things never getting better. In WTF Robert Peston gives us his highly personal account of what those who have ruled us for years got so badly wrong and what we need to do to mend the terrible fractures in our society.

Timely and important

Loved this book. It was thoughtful, measured, well argued and compelling. Should act as a manual for our times from someone who really cares. The idea of bookending between two letters to his departed father was beautiful.
My only mark off is Robert has such and engaging and distinct voice I would have liked it all the way through (whilst the narrator was very good it is because Robert is so well known I kept hearing his voice even through someone else!)

Story
"While the history books are filled with tales of obsessive visionary geniuses who remade the world in their images with sheer, almost irrational force, I've found that history is also made by individuals who fought their egos at every turn, who eschewed the spotlight, and who put their higher goals above their desire for recognition." Wonderful life lessons

I really enjoyed this book. Always nice when narrated by the author and the stories used really brought the stoic and Buddhist philosophy lessons to life. Would also give a shout out to the brilliant bibliography and quotes that you can download from his website. Very thoughtful of the author for those listening via an audiobook.
