War seethed across the planet. Machines soared through the air, churned through the seas, crawled across the surface, pushing ever forward, carrying death. Earth was engaged in titanic struggle. Germany, Russia, France, China, Japan: the maps were changing day by day. The hostilities spread in ever-widening ripples of destruction: Britain, Italy, Africa...the fate of the world hung in the balance. Then the real enemy came.

Brilliant historical alternate history, more out there than most his books but it works. Praise really has to go to the narrator juggling a cast of so many characters and making each feel distinct, especially the aliens.

Well performed and the story itself goes from unsettling to outright body horror by the end. You really feel the misery of the characters as the days go on. 100% recommended to any fans of horror.

As someone who knows very little about the Dark Sun setting (I always played Forgotten Realms), this is a great introduction. I’ve heard it described as mad max and d&d mixed, I can see that!

Franklin Roosevelt is the assistant secretary of defense. Thomas Dewey is running for president with a blunt-speaking Missourian named Harry Truman at his side. Britain holds on to its desperate alliance with the United States' worst enemy while a holocaust unfolds in Texas. In Harry Turtledove's compelling, disturbing, and extraordinarily vivid reshaping of American history, a war of secession has triggered a generation of madness. The tipping point has come at last.

Story
Jennette McCurdy was six years old when she had her first acting audition. Her mother’s dream was for her only daughter to become a star, and Jennette would do anything to make her mother happy. So she went along with what Mom called “calorie restriction." She endured extensive at-home makeovers while Mom chided, “Your eyelashes are invisible, okay? You think Dakota Fanning doesn’t tint hers?” She was even showered by Mom until age sixteen while sharing her diaries, email, and all her income. In I’m Glad My Mom Died, Jennette recounts all this in unflinching detail.

Story
In 1914, the First World War ignited a brutal conflict in North America, with the United States finally defeating the Confederate States. In 1917, the Great War ended and an era of simmering hatred began, fueled by the despotism of a few and the sacrifice of many. Now it's 1942. The USA and CSA are locked in a tangle of jagged, blood-soaked battle lines, modern weaponry, desperate strategies, and the kind of violence that only the damned could conjure up for their enemies and themselves.

Another great entry in the Settling Accounts series. From American Empire trilogy now onto this series, which is just as good.
As with the other books, the level of depth in this alternate history is amazing.
The confederate final solution is very chilling as well, last few books pointed to where it was going but now we see it in action.

Turtledove’s ability to create a different but familiar setting is second to none, it feels so detailed and well thought out compared to the typical entry in this genre. Worth a listen, especially if you have listened to the three American Empire books.
